I just got a 780 not realizing that the minimum recommended PSU is 600w, I currently have 550w. I ran a wattage calculator and threw in some overclocking on both the GPU and CPU and was under the 550 mark. My question is should I trust the wattage calculation and go ahead with using a 550w PSU with the 780 or just heed Nvidias advice and pick up a bigger PSU? I would rather not spend 50-70 on a new PSU, but then again don't want to risk blowing the 780 or anything else in my PC. Thanks for your time.
TBH, if the card would not get enough power nothing would happen. Worst case scenario it will restart suddenly in load.
550W could be enough, but the most important thing is 12V+ rail amperage, should be at least 40-42A. btw nice looking card, its that white one right?
Ah, well, thanks for the replies. I decided to get a bigger PSU for overhead/greater overlooking room. I'll make sure to check the 12v amperage. Yup, it's the white one
You'll be okay - I doubt you'd pull 400W. The Techpower article about your PSU does recommend a surge protector though.
I've got surge protectors, but according to the wattage calculator I was around 480w used. Idk, just piece of mind I guess.
Yea, that's what I was afraid of. Looking at a thermaltake smart series 650 I'll most likely grab tomorrow.
Yeah you'll be more than fine with that one. Its basically my CM thunder with 52A instead of 55A http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001819
