I7 920 and two GTX 970 or one GTX 970 and new CPU?

Just wanna add this as evidence hes right that firestrike likes more cores.

The first gen i7s aren't bad for gaming. You will ***** more FPS by going to a newer CPU and losing a gpu. There are still people on this site that run AMD CPUs. So you're good, until dx12 shakes things up in who knows what direction.

Who knows, and amd owners would be the best to qualify the argument but in general one thread for rendering vs many should favour 6 corr setups if only to free cores for gameplay

    lol its cool :)
yeah that's my max, 1240mhz.. Unless I would unlock extra voltage :eek:c: :D

    gpu score looks great :nerd:

This very much depends on if you are at 1080p (not higher) and intend to stay there for at least a while. If this is the case then one nicely overclocked 970 and a cpu/mb/ram upgrade would offer a much better experience in my opinion. You really do need a better cpu than what you have, currently you wouldn't be getting anywhere near the performance peak of sli 970's.

Sorry, i really dont understand what youre saying here.
Being cpu bound and sticking to 1080p? and that needs an upgrade for a much better experience eh?

Sorry man, its guru3d not noobsCentral and seriously i have to draw the line on frankly just crap advice, but im guessing its taking the piss?

I think he worded it a little bit bad.

If he went for dual GTX 970's his minimum FPS stays the same which is basically a waste of the second card.

    ok im harsh lol
I think the min FPs has been covered

Cheers man, voltages - theyre there to be increased :)

Some pretty generalized statements I admit, you just tried to read into what wasn't there lol. I also just woke up at the time.

I was just saying that two 970's would be fairly heavily bottlenecked (esp. in the min fps department) by the i7 920. Also that at 1080p a single 970 performs very well in current games with an up to date CPU. Simple as that.

    Thanks Calculus. :)

I am not sure what you meant, but I think you said 6 cores are better. 6 cores are only better if the particular game needs 6 cores. I can't think of any off the top of my head. I can't not run any game with setup, mind you I am gaming at 1080p on a 120hz Benq, but I would still be okay with a 920 at 3.8ghz.

I can not post links/image yet to prove it. Need to post 10 times in all before i can do that.

But my 3dmark firestrike whit cpu at 4.12 GHz and whit one Card and overclokket is 10523 and whit 2 Cards same clocks 15400.

I can only imagine what 6 core cpu at 4 GHz+ would do to that score. Special whit 2 Cards. I think a second hand 6 core cpu and keep the Cards is the bedst way to go, whit out offer to much on this old pc.

thanks for all your comments and advice. I am so gonna get a 6 core cpu and when do  to it. So it can improve my gamming.

Cpu will be ok, but by games where fast per core performance counts and with mostly low multi threading it WILL lag behind.

    Eg. older 3dmarks06, Vantage, X3TC benchmark, RE5 fixed benchmark, LP2 TestB, GTA4,..

Ok, i get you and i agree with you.

Mantle and DX12 are very similar. DX12 will hopefully be the end of one thread rendering and therefore spread the work across multiple cores. This should reduce the need for powerful per core performance.

    I had a i7 930 @ 3.8ghz.

I was given a i7 4770. non K =/ cant complain. its free. so i bought a mobo to match it.

even the i7 4770 on stock clocks completely destroys all games compared to my i7 930

I can tell you right now that as someone coming from an i7 920 @ 4.2GHz to a 5820k there is a huge 30-40% difference in IPC performance. You will notice a much bigger difference with a Haswell 4790K or 5820K then going to a Xeon on X58. What some people seem not to realize is there are many games that do not utilize multiple threads well, so this is where the IPC improvement will make a big difference.
