New sapphire amd R9 290 giving me a black screen, any ideas?

I uninstalled the old Nvidia drivers, shut down and installed the new card.

After my PC boots up with the new card I installed the new drivers...after the install everything went black.

It acts like it's going to load up fine and then after the windows logo and all that it just goes black. Sometimes it will look like it's good to go and the desktop comes up and all the after about 5 seconds....black again.

When I go into safe mode and try to install different drivers or uninstall the ones I have installed now it says "failed to load detection drivers".

I have heard that this is not completely uncommon for this card, any ideas before I RMA this card?

 

Which drivers are you using? 14.9 have black screen issues for some people

Use DDU to remove the old drivers in safemode

Which model Sapphire? If it's the R9 290 Tri-X OC you must flash the latest video card BIOS (fixes blackscreen issues due to not getting correct voltage)

I had heard that the AMD driver issues were a thing of the past, evidently not though.

That says for asus bios...works the same I guess?

Also I reinstalled the old card. So exactly what steps do I need to do all of this in as far as uninstalling and flashing bios and installing the new ones?

Make the bootable USB:
1. Run HPUSBDisk as Admin
2. Select your device
3. Check "Create a DOS startup disk using system files located at:"
4. Point it to use the win98boot files included in my zip file.
5. Press "Start"

once its done

copy atiflash.exe over to the root directory of the usb stick

copy

285PF5HB.O44 (regular bios)
285PF5HB.U44 (UEFI bios)

over to the root directory of the usb stick

reboot and boot from usb (you might have to change your boot order in your mobo bios)

the usb will boot you into a command prompt:

depending on the switch on your video card you want to flash each bios

atiflash -p 0 285PF5HB.U44 -f


flip the switch (you don't have to reboot you can flip it while its on)

atiflash -p 0 285PF5HB.O44 -f


ok now reset your computer and take the usb stick out


now once in windows open ccc and goto preferences and restore to factory defaults

Small switch on the side of the card to switch between BIOSs

 

There is a switch on the videocard itself which toggles between the UEFI bios and the regular bios. It's right on the top of the card a couple inches from the output ports.

Honestly it doesn't matter which bios you flash to which side.

Worst case I send it back if it doesn't work.

 

Save your original BIOSs first using GPUz - if you need to send it back make sure the original BIOS is back on it

Try before then install 14.4 WHQL then reset to factory defaults and upgrade your drivers from there
