I mean yeah this pretty well known that there are diminishing returns on performance gains. Phone industry is going through it currently. Every new generation of Galaxy phones for example had nearly double the processing performance until recently.

In computing a lot of it is going towards power savings. Intel is trying to move down to mobile and so is Nvidia. I mean look at what Nvidia did here, they went from the 770: 3.2TFlops @ 230w to 980GTX: 4.6TFlops @ 165w. That's pretty impressive for no die shrink. And when next generation Tegra comes out with Maxwell architecture, that gain is going directly into the mobile market.

And the pricing thing is coming from a variety of factors. Nvidia stated with the G80 (8000 series) that the cost of developing that architecture was $600M and 4 years to make it and that price was increasing by ~33% with each major architecture revision. Which again leads back into the performance issue. If the architecture gets more expensive each time to develop and the cost of the end product remains the same then how exactly does a company thrive? As a result Nvidia/AMD moved into smaller revisions and yearly refreshes with smaller gaps between performance. Similar to Intel and it's Tick-Tock release schedule.

And I agree with you on the 670. I'm always going to try to buy the latest because I just have the money to spend and its my hobby. But when my 690 was down I bought a 750Ti and I honestly didn't even notice the difference with the games I play. Not one time was I like "damn I want my 690 back". 750 ran Dota 2, SC2, CSGO, Warframe, everything at high settings with adequate framerate.

I'd say anyone looking to replace a 780 is nuts and if any of you do ill gladly offer my self as a caretaker to keep the dust off of that 780.

Will also depend on what amd release to counter attack the 980. I hope they come up with something great as that will force nvidia to react quicker.
I wont hold my breath though.

AMDs got nothing until sometime in 2015 as far as im aware, but if these are just around the 780/780Ti performance, then they don't need anything.

    My last 4 cards have been ati9800pro - Nv.6800GT - 5850pro - 660ti.
Technically atm I'm running onboard intel (thats the good stuff).
So not a fanboy at all - quite the opposite, unlike a lot of ppl around here (uhoh shots fired)
So yeah an AMD counter would be amazing to help drive costs down.
But ive had the 660 going kaput recently, the "revived" temp solution of going back to 5850 didnt last long either, so I'm quite desperate for a good new value GPU. And the TDP of that 970 looks very interesting as long as the performance is 780-like.

Good god, WHERE ARE MAH REVIEWS ALREADY

So it's looking like a low power 780ti with good DP performance and 25% more vram then?

It also looks like it will be around the same price as the 780ti if the rumours are to be believed.

Great for me, not so much with anyone with anything new.

How is a full gm204 not a full product??

Its a midrange chip, with a highend name, hence why its specs are worse than the much older gk110.

Exactly my thinking. Lets just forget about GM200 for now and enjoy the 9XX series in peace. What comes down the road (hopefully in at least 8 months or more) will be a different story.

Its a full gm204 there wont be anything better than the 980 until big daddy kepler. Just because something faster will be released in the future, doesn't make whats being released tomorrow mid range.

Excellent was hoping it was faster than a ti. Price probably to match too.

Very nice find Rich hope it holds true that puts its performance right at 670 SLI.

Hope the $449-499 leak holds up.

In a local store it is listed for around $900, that's with 20% VAT though, so without the VAT - around $750...

Lol, close to no difference at 1440p - 780 ti at 1200 mhz will still be faster than that midrange chip at 1440p.

And TK, just because its faster than the former achitecture top chip, doesnt mean that it isnt designed as a midrange chip, hence the 204 chipcode, and not 200/210.

A single 980 is matching my SLI setup, definite upgrade for me. I'll go SLI once I have the cash aswell.
