Yeah, you get a bunch of new kids every now and then who don't understand how things work and then we get threads like this.

I remember getting my riva tnt thinking how amazing the 16mb will be compared to the 3dfx voodoo 8mb. This is almost 20 years ago. The vram on riva tnt want purely 3d frame buffer though, but whatever, just saying these arguments are tiring now.

    Well that article is wrong.

Watchdogs caps my Vram and could use even more maxed out with 4xMSAA.

Star Citizen maxes out my ram. And that's just at 1080p with some kind of SMAA. -_- There are few other games that are borderline so yeah, 3GB is really pushing it in my case.

Wow I'm surprised this thread got so many comments in just a few hours... we really love our vram discussions, don't we? :D

Precisly - when i had the 780 6gb Cards, i saw about 4,5 gb vram usage with max settings.

That said, Watch dogs was terribly optimized, and i dont think Ryse will need nearly as much vram, as its built on perhaps the best game engine available, which handles the resources much better.

By the time that 6 GB is needed, it'll be too slow to run anything anyway.

I guess the reason that you're needing to upgrade to 6GB now is because your 690 can't run any new games and doubling your VRAM to 4GB isn't enough?

If you want to be future proof, a 4GB card will be enough for some time. Pascal will surely have 6GB VRAM or something so wait until then.

I have a 690 and i can say that 4Gb will be enough, ive always said 4Gb for alongtime which is the new sweetspot.

I can't recall that ANY video card was EVER released without enough RAM for the performance class it was in. I can only recall cards that had TOO MUCH ram for their respective chips. It almost feels like some people are recommending the heap of crap FX5200 512's of our time.

Oh, and please keep your 1 out of 1000 situations where VRAM does run out.

They up the Vram respectively every generation in calculated increments along side bus width limitations.

Plus us 2K and 4K gamers will be needing it sooner than later. I would not game on 2GB card ever again especially gaming at 1440p with AA.

Which planet were you on when you saw a 512MB FX 5200?

I think even FX 5950 Ultra had only 256mb.

What are the effects when you up the settings and cross that boundary?

4Gb is more than enough. If you went the 1440P/4k route, then you obviously took the wrong route if you planned to always be playing games at max settings (unless you always have a thousand dollars to upgrade your PC at your disposal).

The only games that use even more than 2 GB of VRAM at 1080P or 1200P with 4x AA AFAIK are Watch Dogs and Star Citizen. One is an unoptimized port with not-so-amazing graphics, and the other is an unoptimized alpha of a far-from-finished game.

3GB would be cutting it close. 4gb on the other hand gives a nice amount of head room for 1080P/1200P gamers.

3gb is cutting it close at 1080 and 1200??
