AMD Catalyst 14.7 RC1 (14.200.1004.0 July 9)

These 14.7 RC1 screw Fifa 14 here, it gets bloated with stuttering and is just unplayable. 14.6 RC2 screwed it too, I have local black flickering bars when playing in fullscreen but runs fine in windowed mode. My card is not damaged, the other games I play run perfectly fine. Hope Fifa 15 will not be treated the same.

So I tried this driver and wouldn't you know it, I BSOD in heaven. Second try was fine, but I'm not liking that. So I decided to just test through while I was at it.

14.6v1 76c, 52.7fps
14.6v2 80c, 52.5fps
14.7 BSOD, second try 80c 52.5fps
14.4 73c, test unfinished - would have been around 46fps

Seems like the heat is getting stronger with each version. 14.4 however is just the worst performance ever regardless of it staying much cooler. All beta Idle around 50c while 14.4 idles 46 - 48c.

These temps in a moderately cool room. I'd say its around 70F in here while doing such. AC blowing. I really hope AMD can reduce the heat a little. I figure more performance means more heat, but the jump of 7c is a lot.

 

Have had no BSOD from graphics for the past year on my 3-way 7970 rig. Must be a problem with your system if you get BSOD from these drivers. Make sure you test with stock clocks, run a /sfc scannow, use DDU to clean drivers before installing and have latest drivers for everything.

 

/scannow won't achieve anything, all that does is check for corrupt system files. Not to mention you're on a different platform, though admittedly I haven't seen a blue screen either...

The first question to ask is; what is the stop code?

 

Played STALKER Clear Sky (patch 1.5.10) - 3-5 min and game stop. Monitor shows black screen. There no any game error messages or driver crush message. Other games, including STALKER Lost Alpha runs fine.
PS Tryed to backup driver to 14-4 and 13-12 - result the same.

 

No problems with these drivers so far.

 

Maybe im a lucky guy... since i have amd gpu i never had one simple crash or bsod lol

That's caused by the KB2670838 platform update (prerequisite of IE10/11). MS updated the DX10 API with that update and broke many DX10 games including but not limited to all the games from the STALKER series, Lost Planet, etc. The only solution is to uninstall the update and revert to IE8/9, this has nothing to do with your graphics driver.

Is Mantle stability included in these new 14.7 drivers for the 7870 cards?

I heard that older versions of Mantle for the 7870 cards were crap.

 

AMD promised better Mantle support for HD 7xxx series in future drivers but as we can see they simply lied and focused at R9 series...

 

What improvements that can be done at driver level via Mantle have long since been done by AMD. Any further performance improvements for 7xxx cards must come from the Dice/EA. That's how Mantle works, it puts almost full control in the hands of the game developer.

 

Mantle worked great for me on my 7850 with Thief and Star Swarm. Surely you aren't basing how an entire graphics API performs due to how it works with the coding-horror BF4?

 

Same here. on my cf 280x system I can play thief on full GFX 2560x1440 @ 96Hz only thing I tuned down or off is fxaa = off and ssaa on low. I get 96FPs almost all the time. So mantle does work it's just BF4 that's a mess. Start swarm also works but only on 1 gpu.

 

R9 280/x is the 79xx with a different name.

 

Its BETA.

when it gets released, and they havent optimized for GCN 1.0, THEN you can complain.
