Nice one. in my location the 770 is one par with 280X, so i would take the 770 easily.

Just one note about the soundcards, DON'T BUY PHOEBUS. i had it, drivers are stable but terrible, support is non exist, the interface and function are not that good.

Sound blaster Z,ZXR or STX STX II are way better than phoebus.

    easily?

you would easily pay an extra $75 or 125$ if you buy a 770 which has more than 2GB of memory (the 280X has 3GB minimum) for this

    http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1041?vs=1037

it may be your preference, but I wouldn't call giving an extra $ for a practically equivalent card an "easy choice".

Hah, got to love comments like this. Why would you take a card that have 2GB and more or less same performance as 280X?

Sometimes i really don't understand you.

Yeah I'd easily take the 280x over the 770.

Man great minds think alike. I have chosen similar parts to what Hilbert has chosen in this buyers guide. Like the CPU and cooler on the hardcore page,The SSD on the hardcore page, and The Graphics card on the Main Stream page. I am looking at 2133 8gb memory chips rather than 4gb.

2GB isn't the factor at my use, i prefer nvidia as i have vastly superior XP with them then with AMD, and they have 3D Vision which i use, AMD don't have anything that come close to 3D Vision... so yeah all of those make me choose 770 despite 2GB.

3D vision (and stereoscopy in general) uses about 20% or so extra memory for the same load, pretty cool though especially because it is more supported in games than AMD's approach to 3D.

I am not saying there are no reasons to chose the 770 over the 280x, just surprised about the "easy choice" part and I am going to stop here before the conversation turns into this:

yeah :D i want to avoid all that nvidia vs amd, we have it enough that was not the purpose of this thread.

Still i would not recommend purchasing the Phoebus, the hardware is cool the software is garbage.

You know i had the same experience with my EssenceSTX -- great hardware horrible software -- I wonder why this is. Their software support for their motherboards, in my experience, has been excellent. Their soundcards have had the opposite treatment.

    :)

I haven't been excited about a sound card since the Aureal Vortex A3D days, nobody seems to care these days.

Man I love reading these. Good Job Hilbert.
As always though, I won't be buying anything from your guide :p

What's funny right now, is that even though I associate with the ''die hard gamers unwilling to compromise on the image quality.'' Right now I'm lowering the graphics settings of WoT because it produces too much heat and my room's AC is not powerfull enough to cool the room down X_x

I did not write this one, PantherX is now the editor for the buyers guides. He'll be working on them each passing season. I simply overview and check this guide and assist him where needed.

So all props and thanks should go to him ! :)

I feel weird now. I'll be in the high end spectrum in some respects but pretty much below mid end in others. Oh well.

Same here man. I will be in the Mainstream gaming with my GPU, and the Hardcore with the CPU,RAM,SSD drive, and CPU Cooler as well as PSU. The board I chose to purchase with my parts isn't even listed so I don't know where an Asus Z97pro falls into.
