I'm assuming he thinks AMD are crap and because of that Nvidia can release their budget chip at a higher price.

I don't believe that, but many do.

Starting with the 7970 prices did shoot way up, but I also think costs went way up as well, and neither company is going to absorb these.

But without enough pixel crunching power from the GPU itself, all that bandwidth is absolutely worthless.

It's like hooking up a fire hose to the valve that your normally have a garden hose fastened. without the city greatly increasing the water pressure, all that water carrying capacity goes unused

nVidia does a good job of balancing GPU processing power with memory bandwidth and i don't see that changing anytime soon.

The card will be a beast if it's got 2x SP's of my GTX 680 as well as 8 more ROPs and 72 additional TMU's.

Eh, I guess compared to a 680 it will be pretty good upgrade. But if these specs are real and you take the 750Ti as a benchmark of how well Maxwell actually improves things. I only see this being 25-30% faster than a 780Ti.

And that sound about right. That's kinda what I was expecting but that would put one of these at the level my 670SLI can achieve same with your 690.

Yeah I mean it's going to be faster than my 690 but I don't know if I can justify $700 for the performance increase that I literally just got from a driver. Especially when they aren't really bringing anything entirely new to the table in terms of marquee features. I mean I guess full implementation of DX12 is nice but we won't be seeing games that utilize that until late 2015/2016 at the earliest and by that time Pascal will be right around the corner most likely.

I mean if this card was launching at $500 pricepoint the 680 launched for and Nvidia was going to simultaneously ship a 890 for $1000. Then I'd definitely purchase the 890. But right now at current pricing it doesn't really make much sense for me to upgrade. A theoretical 890 would probably be priced at $1500.

    Being Maxwell @ 20nm, I expected a lower TDP, maybe 200W.
But I think it is too early to take these data as real.

Oh I agree this is why I most likely will wait untill the 980 to upgrade would like to see more than 4GB personally.

Everyone should take this with a grain of salt that price may have been pulled out of someones nether region. We may still end up with a 880 at $500-550 range and a Ti model (likely with a larger memory bus) in the $700 bracket.

Wait, so this is like GK104 midrange sold as high end again, right.. Fail. :infinity: Not really surprised there.

EDIT: at least 48ROPS would be fair, also high vram bandwidth.. This isn't 2010 anymore :p

Everyone here can go, make a wish for what 880 should be with elaborate explanation. And speculation of each of you will be more worth than this :)

I would think on 20 nm they might be able to squeak out higher core clocks.

Overall, in terms of the bus width and memory, I think it's best to understand that this is new architecture and shouldn't be judged on the performance of an earlier generation with different architecture.... which as I recall was actually pretty good.

What I am reading from this article is that this is a somewhat high midrange card, being released likely well in advance of a full Maxwell chip that might even have a new series number, GTX 980, attached to it.

Bleh, why are people never happy? : /

    New, faster, more energy efficient...

Yet, complains complains complains... because of a product name/number?

Sigh, another cash grab using a mid range chip and charging top end prices, just like they did on the GTX680....... Thanks AMD and Nvidia for causing the artificial price inflation to fatten you wallets.

Are you accusing AMD and Nvidia of collusion in price-fixing? I can't see any evidence of that.

If performance is commensurate with price, thats all that matters. Nvidia had a hit with the "mid-range" 680 because it was a significant performance jump vs last gens 580 and matched or exceeded the competition at the time. If an 880 can match a 780ti in performance people will shut up and fork over $499 easily.

If its at least 40-50% faster then yeah i dont mind it being a little crippled at similar 780ti price, if its below 30% its not worth the premium.

Its not represented as high-end now is it?

Nether is GK104. Tell me again how your 580 is faster than a 660Ti.

    A little Oc'ed trades blows with 760 and 670gtx.
