I don't think 8.1 is missing anything for developers/it techs though, definetly compared to Linux but not compared to W7.

I'm kinda tired of the flip flopping on Windows 8. I've used it since the beginning, and they keep changing ****. It's annoying at this point.

Unless something truly revolutionary happens in the field of batteries as well as energy efficiency and heat management I don't see that ever happening.

And even if it did, touchscreens really aren't good control interfaces for gaming.

Never did I think I would feel that way but yeah I like Windows 8.1 a lot more than Win 7.

Same, there are some things that irk me, but I really love the metro screen. that cleaned up my desktop A LOT, and I have everything neatly organized there.
All in all, it functions pretty much the same and looks better...

I upgraded to 8.1 pro a couple of months ago, and after adjusting a couple of simple settings for desktop usage i'm VERY VERY HAPPY with it. I kinda LOVE it. Multimonitor, search feature and overall performance are better by far.

Maybe you have to chance some habit, and normal people is usually reluctant to that.
I'm a power user and i strongly suggest the upgrade, it's worth it.

The thread title is so misleading it's absurd. Even the article clearly states that the update will not have the start menu.

If you look at Microsoft's support roadmap, Win7 will end in 2020 and Win8 will end in 2023. Not much of a spread there. This is another reason I plan on sticking with Win7 until whatever comes after Win8 is released and vetted.

That's never going to happen. At the very best you can expect them to de-emphasize it as they have shown with the start menu screenshot. You can always remove the tiles from the right pane.

Windows 8 is a Frankenstein OS that's being used as a test bed for what the public will
accept in a tablet based OS. Then they will rename it Windows 9.

Just like Windows 7 is nothing more than Vista streamlined and renamed.

It just sucks that they tried to strong arm the user into a tablet OS by removing key
desktop features in hopes we would all fall in love with live tiles.

Had they just kept the start menu & just added tile apps like they are doing now,
Windows 8 would of been a lot better received, Metro & all.

What desktop features? You know you can add start button. It takes 2 minutes.

True but you've got to give the new management credit for not abandoning 8.1 and going straight for 9. It was refreshing to see them acknowledge that they're not at the top any more .. we should see some great software from them soon.

    Windows 8.x has improved alot.
I was never really opposed to the Modern UI itself, I just didn't like how Microsoft forced it upon everyone, making you dependant on 3rd party solutions to get the good old start menu back.

I wonder if Microsoft will backport DX12 to Win8.x

From what I've been reading Windows 8.x will get DirectX 12, it's Windows 7 that it is more unclear on whether it will get it.

Yeah .. the turn around from the terrible 8.0 release to 8.1.1 and then the further expected desktop updates is pretty impressive. It's fun to rip on them for going 180 on the Xbox One and Windows 8 but it's better then being stuck with poorly executed products. I hope they exercise more care with future releases and make the next version of Office less of an eye sore while they're at it lol.
