    The timeline is interesting.

This is the order of things that have happened since last year.. Mantle is announced by AMD, followed shortly by Microsoft announcing they will be making an announcing about directx 12, followed shortly by nvidia stating they will be dropping driver support for all directX 10 and down video cards, followed by Microsoft announcing directx 12 and the fact directx 12 will be supported on all directx 11 hardware and up...

All these things are connected, you don't find this odd?

You don't find it odd that an AMD Rep announced more than a year ago that there was no DX12 coming just to announce Mantle later? Or the fact that an MS Rep came out and said that the AMD Rep was wrong?

This defiantly isn't the early 90's...tech company's esp within the last 10 years have analyst and future road maps always int he works for years ahead...stuff like this just doesn't come up in a board meeting randomly as all of sudden competiton is in play...lol sorry no...ive worked for numerous tech companys and the idea's road maps are years ahead of most think...its like our government...they have tech that's beyond most peoples comprehension and we can do things people could never believe or even fatham...why do you think Nasa no longer does anything or they pretend to do stuff...

Because we have better ways of traveling to the stars now...besides massive rockets...does the average person know this no...should we know about this tech prly not...<<<btw sry for randomness im baked and entangled in my own mind :infinity:

I agree with ClexRex, stuff like this just doesn't appear out of nowhere due to competition. This was in the works for years. Think about all those road maps you've seen from Nvidia/AMD/Intel etc. They plan years in advance.

Just looked through these dx12 slides by Microsoft and have to laugh. It is still not up to par with OpenGL4.4 after 4 years of development!

Games need to break the dictatorial API that is directx! Give the power back to the developers not to the pen pushers at Redmond

    Dictatorial API...sure, why not.
Then I guess OpenGL is more of a socialist API.

I mean, DirectX did prevent OpenGL from functioning properly...or not.
Oh, that Windows prevented OpenGL from functioning properly...or not.

Don't blame the API, nor the API vendor.
Blame the graphics engine maker that didn't really push OpenGL aside from id Software and several small studios.
Blame the publishers that put strict time constraints on development cycle that made most devs had to use the API that most major graphics engines supported.

    Otherwise, pass the weed.

Wait what.. your first post is all about how Microsoft is using DX12 to fight against Mantle because Mantle is for PC only. Now you're saying DX12 doesn't provide a benefit for Xbox. Which one is it? And what multi-platform and console port games? So far all the ones out on both do run better on PC?

And DX12 was definitely in development during the same time Mantle was. There is no way they wrote an API and ported an entire game over to it in 6 months. Also I highly doubt Microsoft cares about Mantle, console gamers aren't going to suddenly buy PC's and switch. The consoles are selling more than adequately as is.

    DX12 coming to Xbox !!!
Low level access for ALL architectures !! (..lol)
    etc. !!

I remember the announcement of DX11. Pretty loud too.

There is no data or numbers. This is just more PR from MS.

The existing problem and biggest challenge with Mantle at the moment is that it needs NV on board. I highly doubt AMD can convince NV to join.

DX12 might be just a patch to reduce overhead. Are there any developers excited about this news?

    I think that:
    1. Mantle was just a quick move to make money from AMD . they knew about MS DirectX 12 so they wanted to make some money quick (and they did), but i think they did not expect for MS to announce it so quick !!
    2. The other thing may be that the forced MS to announce it quicker , but that is not the only reason MS did this, the other reason's may be low performance of XBOX ONE and WIN 8 slow adoption by users, and i think NVIDIA was pushing them to next level.
    3. Like i say'd before Mantle will get a quick death just because the competition.
    4. MS will ship the new DirectX whit WIN 9 and it will be exclusive (just for making money).
    5. Finally a huge and good move by all big players, whit a thumb up for MS.
    6. And we will see games using DirectX 12 faster that we see them using Mantle.

Sorry i didnt read full text, but can someone tell me will this dx12 be supported by win7? Or only 8.1 and 9 windowses? Becouse that would be pitty, i dont want to change to win8 just to use this "feature"...

Microsoft basically dodged the question when asked so probably not. I would imagine 8 would get it and obviously 9.

Xbox One uses the same Direct3D 11 API as the PC, with all the same levels of hardware abstraction. How come this is a "low level access"?

Of course you are oblivious to the fact that Direct3D 12 is such a fundamental change and goes away from most hardware abstraction and resource management present since at least Direct3D 7, so you could demand that Microsoft must port it all the way back to Windows 7/Vista/XP and probably support D3D9 class hardware too. Who is being greedy?

Windows 8.1 is a possibility if Microsoft decides to simply add another DDI level to the WDDM user mode driver, i.e. an entirely new DDI12 in addition to existing DDI10/11 and DDI9 (which is used by the Direct3D 11 runtime for feature levels 9_x and by legacy D3D7-D3D9 comatibility runtime). This will however provide little or no benefit for Direct3D9/Ex and Direct3D10/11 applications.

But if they choose to implement [post=4778110]an entirely new (WDDM 2.0?) driver model that requires D3D11 feature level cards[/post] and is specifically tailored to the Direct3D 12 runtime only (i.e. no more legacy DDI9 and DDI10/11 in the same driver, only DDI12), they have two more options:

    1) They might use the approach from Windows Vista - i.e. re-implement Direct3D 10/11 and Direct3D 9 as an emulation layer on top of Direct3D 12 runtime, or

    2) They might re-implement Direct3D 11 runtime (and maybe legacy Direct3D 9 runtime) directly on top of the new driver model, so there will be some performance benefits even for Direct3D 11.x/10.x apps ( i.e. what they called the "lightweight Direct3D 11 runtime from Xbox One")

In these last two cases, they won't be able to practically back-port this new driver model to Windows 8.1, it will remain Windows 9 exclusive.

A new driver model was hinted at [post=4786244]by AMD speaker at the GDC DX12 session[/post], but it is not entirely clear what approach they have chosen. More details should probably emerge at //build 2014.

Not to mention that most mobile processors have quite different extensions to match their feature set, even though the API is supposedly "the same" OpenGL ES.

I love the flame wars between PC/Consoles, and NV/AMD, XBONE/PS4. blah, blah, and so on. Seriously am I one of the few people that don't care about the name on the product. When I buy I buy based on price vs. performance. I could care less for PhysX, I could care less about mantle as well. Honestly I just want these people to develop products that are used to make our experience better. This round I went with Nvidia because the performance and price was there. Last go round was my 7950's. I guess people just have to try to prove what they buy is better because they bought it.

so wait..... MY 660ti will be able to utilize DX12??? or am i wishfully thinking? if so... i have to give MS props for allowing people to hold on to the GFX cards we allready have...

So is it true??? or will my 660 TI need to be replaced?
