    Dear Guru's
I am seriously considering running for president in 2016 but I need a platform (hope and change stuff):D
However, Unlike most politicians...I want the facts first.

Could the internet be free over-the-air like TV or is it more complicated than that?

I think in the near future what will happen is there will be WiFi coverage almost everywhere (maybe not in rural area's) and what you will do is log in with your ISP credentials.

I think the ISP's will get together and set this system up and share the cost, primarily done via large masts or perhaps even satellites.

OTA TV isn't really free. It's paid for by ad revenue...unless you're hijacking your neighbors wi-fi. :) Not an issue where I live. Nobody is close enough.
The bandwidth has to be paid for in one manner or another regardless of whether it is wired or wireless.

Verizon has something similar. It seems every place I go there is a wifi hotspot for FiOS subscribers.

You should make your argument more explicit for tax payer funded universal internet access.:nerd:

    Agree Hemi...:p

I can get 14 HD channels over-the-air free....

Is internet service that much harder?

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I feel like there would be security. Plus, you'll have a lot of people that will abuse it and torrent crap and suck up all the bandwidth.

We don't even have free health care, and you are running on a free internet platform? Ya sound like a elementary school kid saying "make me class president and everyone gets free pizza at lunch!".

Not sure, but I very much do agree that certain bandwidths should be 100% free to the public with todays advancements in net speeds.

    1) I don't think it is good idea to let internet being public (payed by tax money). And what if person wants it own IP address and having private network?

    2) It could be possible in Japan, since distance you have to cover is rather small and there more people living per quad kilometer. In America there will be technical difficulties covering ground.

    3) Does everyone needs internet? Considering people paying taxes for it, all should receive the benefits from it. Like roads, water, schools, 911, etc... What if person decides to get his own private network and he still have to pay internet taxes?

I think the best it to let big companies provide WiFi connection in their facilities, and people who want stable internet, make contract with provider.

A free internet wouldn't be bad, but I don't know how they'd go about it. If not wifi, maybe satellites? And if I remember right, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetZero tried back in the day, but then everyone just figured out how to disable the ads.

You'd have to look into the way https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Software_Foundation and that kind of stuff is funded and ran. The hardware and people to maintain it will never be free. But it probably could be done some day. Some how.

From my understanding it is possible but carriers don't want anyone else tapping into that spectrum since they themselves want it in case they want/need to expand their own networks.
