I would go for 8x2, little bit less stress on the controller.

^agreed two RAM sticks is always a better idea than fully populating the DIMM's.

Why would he go 16GB for a gaming system? Useless.

he won't need more than 8gb for games for a long while (year or two).

Yeah I didn't really read on his use/purpose of the build but if its purely gaming then 8GB is more than enough.

Now if you do gaming and you make.. youtube videos or gameplay videos in general and encode/video edit then 16 gigs will make its use as I've easily ate through 8GB when using after effects and such.

But for just regular gaming and use then 4x2 would be more than enough.

i usually keep it 5 years and replace the gpu every 2 years
so i would best get an 8x8

The extra ram ain't gonna cost you any more power or heat so if it makes you feel a little more comfortable to have the extra 8GB then sure go for it.

prescient, about the 16GB ram and the i7.

an i5 is more than enough for gaming, and it will support future video cards, especially with the mantle/direct3d 12 fuss.
you WOULD need an i7 if you want: faster video encoding, faster 3d renders, and maybe faster compiling of source code, althought i'm not totally sure about the last one since the difference will probably be marginal.
16 gigs of ram. no game in the near future will need an absurd amount of ram. 8 gb is enough, and if need be you can always stick in 2 more modules IF you decide you need them maybe in 1-2-3 years.
I have 16 gigs of ram because i'm a 3d modeling hobbyist and huge scenes tend to eat up a ****ton of ram.
I also compose music with huge sound libraries that sometimes exceed 8 gigs of ram. this is why I bought 16 gigs. if you won't do any of these, you won't need 16, it's a bit of an overkill.

SO, if you're opting purely for gaming, get an i5, 8 gigs of ram and invest in a better video card.
as for the mainboard, I use an asrock z68 extreme3 gen3. it's actually a surprisingly solid mobo and handles overclocking very well. didn't actually expect that much from this mobo, i thought this component would be the weak link in my system.
about asus and gigabyte: like sykozis, i've had some issues with asus mobos in the past, but no issues with gigabyte mobos. I owned 3 asus and 2 gigabyte boards (and a foxconn one haha).

I'm not saying asus sucks. I'm just biased against them. I will buy their videocards and laptops anytime. but I wouldn't go for their mobos again. maybe I was just unlucky or not, it doesn't matter. you're the one who needs to draw the conclusions.

now, what I'm gonna suggest. IF you have 100$ extra to throw in, I seriously recommend investing in an SSD for you operating system. I have a 60gb one and I'm storing the OS and the programs I use mostly (photoshop, maya, flstudio, etc) and I assure you, the investment is soo worth it. I'm actually considering another ssd for my games after I upgrade my video card. ssd -> simply the best upgrade you can make. everything is blazingly fast.

i must disagree based on the information's i have i dont think you know
that games is the most demanding in pc resources in all activities after
    war machines .

    http://gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=1694

bf4 is not the most demanding game ever , and recommended system req
is not the better performance you can get , but optimal is .

so you can imagine what those games will ask next 2 years .

8 gb ram 6 cores cpu 3 gb gpu memory

so i can make use of the i7 hyper thread and the 2mb extra l2 memory cash .

i used p5q pro since 2009 with no troubles and i guess its each one personal experience i intend to go on with them

    i like those 3

    MAXIMUS VI HERO
    Z87-PRO
    Z87-A

i see we have lots to disagree hehe because also i dont want the ssd
its complicated and the new parts will be fast enough the ssd has
    no effect in games

Yeah use 4770k, dont go short on cpu power now.

I would pick Hero, 2nd Pro.

About ram, pick one 2133mhz CL9, it will be 100% OC'able to 2400mhz CL10 1T 1.65v xmp, needs only a slight VCCSA voltage tweak..

8gb vs 16gb well it depends, I see its quite expensive now, up to you. But do use those 2133mhz CL9 rams, this way you won't overpay 2400mhz freq.

If I'm understanding this statement correctly, you think games are the most demanding applications that can be run on a PC? If so, that's entirely wrong. There are a lot of applications that are more demanding than games are.
