Rumours now about Mantle in Dx12, AMD teamed up with Microsoft, AMD really excited about what they have coming at GDC.

Yeah, there was a tweet by AMD to "wait and see what we have for GDC" a while ago, so we may see a surprise or two.

where do you get those "rumours"? So you are saying that amd just sold their MANTLE code to be implemented into DirectX

AMD has always maintained it will eventually be open, so who knows.

    haahhaa...

he will tell you he does anyway, then when you ask him for proof he will tell you to write ATIMan...

Would there be a stupid idea for someone to realise "new kind of" directx which is such an easy implementation for devs that almost everyone would choose to use it? And it would be made by kickstarter. I wonder the price of that. Its not utopia is it? lol

Well with the kickstarting there would be no guessing on gamer feedback on how important it is for us to transition into new kind of gaming..
The only game which is next gen for me is no man sky..
And the most dragged down game by this old tech is skyrim (which had to be dx11)

All right lets keep that wishfull thinking :)

Quite a scenario pro fantasy movie you got there.
People crowd fund development of code which will then M$ release as their own (Giving it name DirectX XX.) because otherwise it would not become standard and never be used by nVidia/intel...

You are better off signing petition to nVidia to join Mantle effort. And second one to promptly make Mantle work on linux (this is actually something nVidia may listen to as they have a lot of GPUs on Android platform).

OGL is controled by the Kronos Group, they arent much more responsive than MS.

Khronos is a consortium. Its founders (and still current members) include ATi (now AMD of course), Intel and Nvidia. Please don't speak about things you know nothing about.

Their response is so low and response time so high that Developers gave up coming to nVidia and AMD asking to push OpenGL to reduce overhead. Because OpenGL is made with certain things in mind and wanted to keep status quo.

Those few things which were possible to reduce CPU overhead were not enough.
Therefore AMD as member of this made step forward and spent time(money) to show it is possible and it is necessary.

Every change in DX/OGL around CPU overhead were forced by AMD's Mantle. And every game developer using Mantle is likely happy.
And those who will use improved DX/OGL in future may again say: "Thank You AMD!"

Is Khronos not run by an Nvidia guy?

If developers wanted this so much it would have happened without any AMD involvement, so let's not get carried away.

    What are you talking about?

Amd has the worst Opengl Implementation of the three major vendors, Nvidia has Opengl extension that gives you the same performance improvements claimed by Mantle before anyone has even hear about it.

John Carmack already stated that when asked about mantle last year.

And nvidia has been improving Opengl and creating new extensions to make it faster and add more features while amd has been trying to push Mantle that only works in GCN architecture.

So thanks AMD for add another closed API to the mix, and to have that incredible bad Opengl implementation, thanks to make linux drivers that crash for almost everything and make a 6870 run faster than a 7950 and even a 270x in most tests (on linux).

Thanks to make Mantle only available for Windows, and thanks to get 9x more draw calls when Nvidia stated 10x more with Opengl.

In the past i thought that AMD was more Opensource and standard friendly that Nvidia... but their OpenCL sucks (the have made lots of progress with the 14.1 drivers but still sucks), their OpenGL sucks too... they claimed OpenGL 4.3 but there's some parts broken or not working as expected, and the performance is not too good.

So if you are planing to work with Windows ONLY and you don't need Opengl / Native WebGL (I said native cause ANGLE "almost native graphics layer engine" that translate bugged drivers Opengl calls to directX) then you are fine.

@Sdar: My post was not meant to say that AMD is and was driving OpenGL improvements at all and it did not say so.
It clearly states that recent announcements are basically forced by AMD's actions.

It would be very ignorant to believe that something which is in development for 20 years without any real (I mean REAL) improvement in this area (CPU overhead) would be improved just now at same time.
No sane person can believe that AMD announced Mantle. And at very same time OpenGL an DirectX was closing to new major release which would be aimed for same thing would be just coincidence.

BTW I heard a lot about nVidias OpenGL extension over years, capable to deliver 10 times more draw calls. I just never saw it in action and comparison to DirectX. And through decades we had quite a few engines written on OpenGL... None to deliver more than 10% over DirectX.

And finally as far as OpenGL goes I never had issue with single game caused by drivers on AMD or nVidia side. Because drivers have required version implemented before game get released.

Quitting Carmack is funny as he is quite bold both in statements and actions. If that was possible he would do it just because he can. Then you would get "id tech 4/5" with possibility to enable special effects which would make game look awesome and would run flawlessly on nVidia while crawling around 5 fps on AMD top cards.
    - well I probably somehow missed that in setting and while messing with configs
