Bloomberg reports that Microsoft is cutting the price of Windows 8.1 by 70 percent for makers of low-cost computers and tablets. Obviously this is to be able to compete with Google's Chromebooks etc...

Microsoft Windows 8.1 will get 70% price reduction

I'll probably do the same, german199, even though I did buy a couple of copies of W8 when it first appeared on Amazon. ;)

It should be illegal to reduce price by 70% on the charges their initial price was 70% bigger and the product was broken :)

All in all is a good move for MS, and it will make some users happy.
By the way Win 8.1 is not broken, the only problem is the interface, but if don't count it you will get a nice OS (not the best bust still a good one).

    Hmmm...

This is much smaller thing than the press wants to tell you. Its only for PCs selling for less than $250 so its only for the junk market.

Helping their OEMs be more competitive can't be a bad thing. I hope they make it up in volume.

In other news, Microsoft discovers that most users wouldn't downgrade to Windows 8 for free.

The amount of negativity in almost every post in 'Frontpage News' is bothering.

Ummm I'd still prefer Linux. This sounds like MS is desperate.

Win 8.1 is pretty good. I might buy some copies for my other PCs.

These days people aren't happy unless they are complaining about something, so negativety should be expected on tech forums.

Windows 8.1 is far from perfect, but it's better than Windows 7 and that is all that matters.

This should be good news for a lot of people as it will bring down prices, which might help bring some people back to laptops/desktops.
Probably not though, most people are happy with a tablet now and Apple and Google have the majority of those customers.

The only reason I haven't moved to Windows 8 is because it doesn't offer me anything major over Windows 7. I'd be more tempted to jump over if the price was low enough, but I doubt I'll bother anytime soon. I'll see what the next major update does for things and consider the move then.
