I would wait a couple of months and see what Nvidia's Maxwell GPU's have to offer.

Thanks but I'm going back to AMD, not a fan of nVidia crippling GeForce cards to make money on Quadro

If money allows, the 290 is on the cards asap

Ok, so I just found out I'm getting a £350 budget for next Thursday at the latest

    I can't find the 290 Tri-X anywhere

What are the differences between cheap PowerColor/XFX and more expensive Gigabyte/MSI ?

Are they built with sub-quality components vs the more expensive cards ?

Which of these 290s would people recommend ?

EDIT - Actually, re-reading the advice in this thread, the MSI TF 290 looks the most likely candidate now

Why would you get a 290 when the price is so inflated right now? If I were you I would upgrade to a 4770K first.

Mantle is vaporware, it it's ever released then we can decide. Until then it's pointless.

Careful I get called a fanboy every time I say this. (Everyone forgets I called G-Sync vaporware before it was released also)

I called gysnc vaporware too along with the 790 and 6 gb 780 and or titan black too. I also call mantle the same as well

A 4770k ? My board is AMD lol

FX-8350 @ 4.8 is more than enough CPU imo

I was looking at the 780s but I hated my entire NVidia experience with this 760 and it's put me off buying NVidia again

Plus the 780 is out of my budget even for the cheapest one, £350 really is tops

Don't take offence to this but if all you want to hear is AMD recommendations why post this in general hardware? Maybe you should have posted in the AMD section.

Yep, that's top of the list atm :)

That Tri-X must be popular, absolutely everywhere is OOS

I was reading up on unlocking the 290 to the 290X, and it looks like XFX, Sapphire and PowerColor are having pretty good unlock rate compared to other models - the MSI has 0 success rate lol

Because as I said in my OP, I hadn't decided when I made the thread, but since this thread is alive and still more or less about the same thing, I didn't see any reason to make a new thread ;)

Mods can move to AMD section if necessary

If the 290 custom is cheaper than a. 780 go for it. But I dont see how it would be better running Microsoft Office though. Your 760 is a pure gaming card and neck and neck with a 7870. Gk104 is gimped for that aida benchmark. Thats why the 7870 performed better in that bench.

I've done a bit more testing and it's not just office that its struggling with, GIMP does the same thing if anything else is using the GPU

Main reason Im wanting to go back to AMD is because I've had 5770>6850>7870 and none of them had any problems running multiple programs all using the GPU together, including Office PM / GIMP etc

Soon as I got the 760, problems

Then I find out that NVidia cripple their GeForce GPUs to make money from their Quadro range, and the only thing that is different between my 7870 and this 760 in terms of specs is the parts that they crippled, Compute / Floating Point etc

So Im worried that if I go NVidia again, Im gonna end up with the exact same problem as I have now, and for half a grand, I wouldn't be best pleased if that happened

And I don't have access to any other NVidia GPUs to see if it's just a problem with this 760 or not

I know I wouldn't normally be running GPUz render test & edit a 1080p wallpaper in OPM - but I know 100% I could do that without any lag with my 7870, I can't do that with this 760, and I want to be able to do it if I choose to

Im not happy having paid £200 for a GPU that can't edit an image unless the entire system is idle

it's not really. a good 290 can be had for £330, imo that is a great price. MSI gaming/Gigabite WF3 290 is around £50 cheaper than a equivalent 780. That's by no means a bad deal.

I know your board is AMD. That was my point. We can agree to disagree though, as it's just what I would do in your situation.

As far as hating Nvidia because of your 760, why did you buy one in the first place when you had a 7870 before?

Also, how is it possible that you can afford a 290 but not a 780? Unless the litecoin craze didn't hit the UK which I find hard to believe. Although going of what eclap just said I guess it's just not affecting you guys as much. Probably because you pay way more for electricity than we do.

A fan on my 7870 failed, so I took it back to the shop for RMA, it had a 2 year extended warranty with Sapphire, they sent it back for me and Sapphire refunded the full amount I bought it for over a year earlier which was £200 - that £200 became store credit at that shop and the 760 was the best card they had in terms of gaming benchmarks so I went for that

    I can get a 290 for under £350, I can't get a 780 for under £370 - my budget is £350 absolute max

EDIT - Yea I tried normal BitCoin Mining with the 7870 a while ago and from what I could see after half a day of mining, I was going to break even in cost of electric vs BitCoins earned

I have a pre-pay electric meter that shows how much you're using in £'s and pence as you use it

    Very much so :D

Feel like a kid at Xmas again, I've not been this excited for a hardware upgrade for ages, even my 8350 and RAM sat in a box for a couple days before I bothered installing them
