Which GPU to buy next?

Didn't want to pick a video card forum because I am still deciding whether to go for another NVidia or go back to AMD so just stuck this in general hardware

Im not happy with my GTX760 and might be getting a budget of £300-£400 in the next couple of weeks

Im looking at the 280X > 290 > 290X but I do quite like TXAA and PhysX

Bit dubious to go for another NVidia after this experience with the 760 but willing to listen to advice

So the question is, for £300-£400, which GPU would people recommend?

Looking for specifics, ie. the make & model, like EVGA or Sapphire or ASUS etc as I found out the ASUS I have now is crippled compared to other 760s in terms of OCing ability and other little features like extra BIOS switching

Appreciate any tips / experience / advice

 

Dunno I'd recommend AMD because of Mantle, it's too much worth it.

Think you'd be happy with a 290.

 

Some Brands to go for are Asus Sapphire and EVGA both excellent and put the rest to shame.
As far as cards go 280x/7970 or 680/770.
Or for more if you got the money GTX 780 or R9 290 but i would only consider these currently for above 1080p gaming.

If you don't mind me asking what was the problem with your 760?

Yea it's crap lol - it's ok in games, but just feels weak for general PC use, I had a 7870 before this and it made the system feel much more snappy, with this 760 everything feels like there's no power behind it, when I ran the AIDA64 GPU benchmark it showed that the 7870 absolutely whipped the 760s ass in many of the tests, and I can feel it in everyday use

For example if I minimise a game, trying to edit an image in office picture manager results in a slideshow, with my 7870 everything ran as if there was nothing else running in the background - GPUz render test does the same

I can just feel there is a distinct lack of something with the 760 that my 7870 did have, feels like the card struggles to do simple tasks

Yea I think I'm leaning toward the 290, any particular brand better than the other ?

Yeah Sapphire Tri-x or MSI TF4 are top atm.

 

You minimizes games And then proceed to edit images in office?

It has nothing to do with your graphics card. Are you using 32 bit office?

I had problems with pictures loading slow with Word and my Access database, uninstalled, reinstalled 64bit problem solved

It has to be down to the GPU, same Office 32bit install with the 7870 and I had no problems

Same Office 2010 32bit install with no game running, works 100% fine

Only when something else is using the GPU I get slideshow effect, it feels like every resource the GPU has is being used up by the game, even when it is paused & minimised and not rendering anything on screen

I second the 3rd-party 290(X), or try and grab a pair of second-hand 7970s if you can.

 

I seriously doubt its because of your GPU, I played 2 games at once (Guildwars2 and Tera) and used Teamviewer (Remote Control) while Videochat Skyping at the same time and didn't have any kind of lag. Your problem must be software related.

 

From the reviews, other than benchmarks, there's not much point spending the extra on the X, the 290 is apparently only 1fps behind the 290X in BF4 according to OC3D reviews

I can run a movie on one screen and a game on the other, I can run youtube and VLC at the same time, everything is fine - I can not edit a picture in OPM as you can see from my video link in my last post

It's not a software issue, this was not happening with my 7870 in my last windows install, it started happening only with this 760 in the same windows install, so I clean installed Windows 2 days ago and it's still happening - its the GPU, 100%

 

You aren't satisfied with a 760 ? damn. The more time I spend here, the more I feel like I need to change my 8800GT.

What are you going to do with the "unsatisfactory" card anyways ?

 

eBay - it's only about 2-3 weeks old and new ones are still going for £200+ (Cost £200 new) so I reckon £170-£180~ maybe

Actually the nice budget is coming from the missus, and the money I get back from the 760 is going back into her pocket lol

I didn't want to sell this one, then have no GPU until I had enough to buy my new one, so Im going to overlap GPUs, and sell this one once Im up and running with my new one

I have had one of these for a good few days now and It's a awesome card, cool, quiet and oc's nice too and thats before I've even messed with voltages.
