My question is people with the latest gen of cards in Crossfire, how is the smoothness actually in-game? With latest drivers and all the frame pacing etc. Is it comparable now to SLI is what I'm asking. The story goes, I sold one 780, originally to just get a stock cooled card to replace one ACX because of heat probs. With the season change and added fan filters the melting process had ensured. But now I'm currently waiting to see R9 290x benchmarks/FCAT before I make a decision. May go ATI for the first time in several years. Not really sure If I need PCIe 3.0 for 290x Crossfire now either :infinity: hope not.
well it's all about software, with 13.10 beta 2 for example every game for me, including skyrim, fc3, bf4 beta, dota 2 and others are smooth as baby's @$$ with vsync + dxtory video fps limit so smooth that i wanna cry from hapiness, console is BS now in terms of smoothness...
No Gen3 is not required to run bridgeless CF/SLI. I don't know why people even think it would be. ATI were doing this years ago, it's not a new concept....ofc it may impact performance but otherwise you're good to go.
this, i believe the performance penalty will be twice the difference between gen 2 vs gen 3 performance, that means it's not game-breaker. Little differences here and there especially on eyefinity setups or WQHD/WQXGA/UHD resolutions.
Well double would still only be 4% or similar. I figured the cards would still function. But how much of a performance hit will there be, is the question... time to wait I suppose.
My 2 7850's on Gen 3 get about 8-15fps more on everything compared to gen 2.... Oh and I haven't notice any stutter with the new drivers! was a pain getting Metro LL working but that games a B**** to get working right on ati cf it seems.
Serious 8-15 FPS in benchmarks & games, depending on the benchmark and game. serious no s***, and its defo a tad smoother tbh
These are running 8x8 not 16x16 btw, so I think the gen 3 makes a big diffrence. 8x8 gen 2 would not be as good as 8x8 gen 3, my motherboard only does 8x8, 16x4 :thumbdown ,Gen 1, 2 or 3
I tried 16x16 vs 8x8 with HD7850 CF, the difference is like 0-5% at most for these cards... As for smoothness its really good for me with 13.10 B2 I had a little trouble with BF3 but newest drivers fixed it
Yeah but did you try 16x16 gen 2 then 16x16 gen 3? or 8x8 gen 2/3?, I wouldnt mind knowing the diffrence with 16x16 gen 2, with 8x8 gen 3?
I don't have SLi but thought i would mention that CrossFire is so smooth now that when your FPS hits the refresh rate (VSync and FPS caps off) it feels as smooth as VSync. Thats been my experience with games & benches that I can make run or dip below 60FPS. For the rest, they run beyond 60FPS and they are as smooth as FPS beyond the refresh rate can be. Tried 1080p60, 1440p 60 and 1440p96. BF3 (SP) for CF at 96Hz.
heres what I came up with. its a graph of pci e scaling with a 680 and 7970 http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/23.html
Crossfire has improved over the years but it needs frame pacing for us eyefinity/crossfire users. As soon as amd sort that out ill be happy. Im considering moving to 2x780 as I loove gaming in 3d.
I too can vouch for crossfire "smoothness" with 13.10 B2. Haven't found a game yet that isn't running smooth. And I take smoothness pretty darn seriously with most of my games vsynced at 110HZ @1440P.
