What worries me its not haswell being such a small upgrade, is that Broadwell will just be die shrink... well if they dont support ddr4 and sata express wont be worthwhile either... so what another 2 years for skylake.... this is going to be the longest wait i have done in upgrading.

This applies so well to me. Simply isn't enough reason to upgrade, yes the power drop would be nice, but properly tweaked I can hit 4.6 GHz with this chip, more than enough for now. Hell I may even end up seeing what AMD out with the new FX stuff in the near future.

It's surprised me Intel have gone down the same route as IB with the thermal paste. How long 'til we see a delidded Haswell?

Intel has no doubt learn their lesson, they are probably using stronger glue

I thought at the least it would be 5% faster than Ivy Bridge and use solder rather than cheap thermal paste so it could get a heavy OC. To me stock performance never matters, only the OC performance... but it looks like that won't even really outdo IB at all.

This really pisses me off, I'm sitting on a Nehalem/Bloomfield chip, I was hoping this thing would get a small IPC boost and OC easily beyond 5GHz on one of those crappy self-contained water coolers.

Now what do I do, it's the same crap as IB and just 1 year before changes such as DDR4. You know what would have been nice? If there was competition so I could buy from another company! :bang:

    :S

Now this is a let down, i expected more from that fancy architecture, i've looked around a bit and i have mixed feelings,

the worst part has to be this, which i kinda hoped it won't be true.

But it can shine at some more poorly coded games, stock vs stock

    Skyrim @ 1080P
    3770k 75fps
    4770k 84fps
    --------

    Bf3 @ 1080P Ultra
    3770k 68fps
    4770k 71fps
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=k8-bCwcZqDo#t=321s

or up to 70fps difference at lower reso, for example Dirt3, ~ 25fps in DeusEx HR, Skyrim ~ 22fps, ~ 10fsp in F1 2012, ~6fps in Metro LL, Hitman Absolution ~5fps difference

I really hope its just a ES thing!

So it's not even faster than a 3770 out of the box.

With new Revs of mobos maybe you get 5-10% increase.

If this is an engineering sample is there going to be a quick review of a retail chip or an update to this review... assuming there is any difference at all?

You know, why couldn't they separate the lineup a bit further. K chips should be soldered at least, then the price difference could actually be justified.

I'm disappointed by this release but then again, now I don't have to upgrade

Well, a pair of 770s is tempting...

    Look one post above,

yes it is by games, up to 5-15fps on avg faster clock vs clock, depending on the game and reso/gpu.

Yeah looks like almost all review sites got a ES.. Hope that bit-tech quote is true

Some of you people have completely unrealistic expectations:

And this is completely ignoring the ass-whooping part that is the GT3e.

    Nice and thorough review, thanks.
Sadly, gives me no reason to upgrade.
This 2500K will easily be the processor I've used for the longest in my main machine, almost 2.5 years now, it should make it to near 4 years if it doesnt die :p

@TJ, will you be getting the 4770K or 3770K?

What an odd situation. There's really no performance advantage to speak of and Intel decided in all its wisdom to make it just as hot as the 3770K. Weren't the K series intended to keep gamers happy? *scratches head*
