Most high end GFX cards us GDDR5, so probably aren't affected by this. This will be the lower end of the market.

Edited the title to reflect DDR3 only cards!

Hope they don't start on the high end DDR5 cards next, waiting for Haswell chips/boards and possibly a new GPU.

You can't edit thread titles, but I can. Sorted it for you.

GDDR5 is based on DDR3 and is shipped from the same vendors, so there is a good chance that this then affects all graphics cards.

I had the same reflex as you guys :p What's the link between the rise of DDR3 and graphics card. They are kinda all on GDDR5.

The main difference is in the number of memory controllers between GPU and vram.

GPU's can have as many as they want, the more they use the higher the buswidth (2 for 64-bit bus, 4 for 128-bit, 6 for 192-bit, 8 for 256-bit, and so on) but this means using a bigger die.

CPU's are limited to one 64 bit controller per channel (dunno why) which in my case means my bus is 128bit (or 256bit on Intel quad channel boards).

So, dram prices go up a few cents....and consumers get ripped off by greedy companies trying to justify price increases by several dollars....

Sorry, this just cancelled by next GPU upgrade. I refuse to pay more because companies are getting greedier....

Good thing I already paid $500 for mine. I can't possibly be ripped off any more.

My upgrades are optional from year to year since I don't play any overly demanding games. Hell, my newest game is TorchLight 2 and it'll run just fine on entry-level cards....lol.

As long as my 460's are playing titles at acceptable (to me) framerates then I'm avoiding a GPU upgrade. 680/690 prices have hardly shifted since they entered the market, in fact some seem to have crept up, and the Titan hasn't done anything to impress me pricewise either as that's gone up in price since release.

I also found this artice on the frontpage from Jan 30th: http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/ddr3_pricing_will_rise.html

Yes it's horrible, also you know what this reinforces?
It reinforces the idea that the next-gen consoles are gonna carry a hefty price tag.
There was chatter about sony not making same mistake again by overpricing, but in this financial climate well ..a hardcore user of the consoles in work i know is saying £600.

Some guy you know at work that plays on consoles is estimating £600? Sounds legit. I'm pretty sure the PS4 is up for pre-order at a few places for £400, whether that will stick or not is beyond me. That said, considering the tech in the box I really can't see it being much more than that.

Better buy your RAM upgrades for Haswell now as when they ship the prices are only going to go one way, and it won't be down!!
