Had that issue since 12.11 Betas. Existed since 12.10. Fixed by uninstalling the newest APP SDK that comes with your driver and installing version 2.8 (I think) or simply installing APP SDK from a driver prior to 12.10. That fixed the GPU usage for me, rose back to 94-99% or so.

Yep, iancook221188 was referring to this post in particular.

Moreover, we are in Beta Testing another project 7662 and you can view its details here.

A short summary (can change during the Beta testing) is that Kepler GPUs are not as powerful as their Femi GPUs counterpart. In some cases, Nvidia GPUs require a full core. AMD GPUs in the upper end of 7000/6000 Series are performing very well when compared to their Nvidia counterparts. Most of the time, AMD GPUs do not require a full core. In some cases, the GPU is being under-utilized and it seems that the Driver version plays an important role. If you want more details, you can check out the Google Spreadsheet.

yeah Catalyst 13.2beta7 sorted out some of the under utilization for me and F@H went from
less than 59% load upto 89% load on the GPU.. But core_17 is working like a charm at 99% load on the GPU and only a 1~2% CPU usage

    HD7850 @ 950core and 1250mem is doing just a squidge under 16300ppd

WHATTTT? Core_17? 16k ppd on 7850? Low CPU usage? FINALLY!

Yep, FahCore_17 is a pretty significant step forward for GPU folding! Do note that it is still in Beta so things may change.

Ummmm PantherX, seeing my 7970 almost break 40k ppd on stock clocks was enough to make me very, very, very happy. One main reason I got this card, for folding@home potential.
OMG back to watching my baby fold! Cya!

    Folding @46k PPD on 7970. SMP 7 on i7 930 @3.61GHz @15-17k PPD.

    Getting 61-63k PPD in total.

    Je suis very happy.

However, a question. Since SMP waits for the slowest core, it suffers when, let's say on SMP 8 on a quad core with HT, one of the cores is loaded with a non-folding process.

With SMP 7, does the same happen due to only one of the threads being used on one of the cores at any one time?

Also, does locking Core Affinity to, let's say CPU 0,2,3,4,5,6,7 and leaving CPU1 for FahCore_17 (so as to get a fixed 98-99% GPU load without dipping to 90s), worsen SMP performance?

What about SMP7 vs. SMP6, where only 3 full cores are used?

    Thank you.

with CORE_17 on your HD7970 it should only be using a max of about 3~5% of one CPU core so I wouldn't even bother using affinity

I started with SMP3 with my HD7850 and going to SMP4 didn't really effect the overall PPD

and GPU load never goes under 98% and CPU load is at 100%

Thank you for the reply. How much PPD do you get on SMP3 alone, SMP4 alone, and on 7850 alone? How much do you get when both are running simultaneously?

    HD7850 gets a little over 16K
    SMP3 gets 6.5k
    SMP4 gets 8k

    combined PPD for HD7850 and PII X4 965 smp4 = 24,633 PPD

that some good ppd number there:)
as the new core17, now mean that the amd card use a lot less cpu power as did the nvidia core15. when the nivdia client was like that i just ran smp 12 as it gave me more ppd than running smp 10 or 11 (when i could run that can't now) i also was running two gpu clients at the same time on the same core. it does give me alot better result when i run them on different cores

folding dose not work with prime number very well at all

Thank you for the reply. I've been trying SMP8 for a day and will check my results.

How about CPU usage on the new Core_17 for the Nvidia cards? I tried it on a friend's GTX670 with i5 3570K and it was using 30%, a full core (don't know why it was higher than 25%).

What PPD are you getting for each GTX670 on Core_17?

Also, about the prime number, do you mean odd number? As I have heard that folding on an odd number of cores is not a good idea (performance-wise?), and I posted here to verify this.

Athlonite told me above that he's getting only 500PPD less on SMP3 than SMP4, and that's an i5, so he's losing a full core in that transition. SMP8 vs SMP7 is bound to be different (less drop even). I'm currently testing SMP8 to compare to SMP7, but what do you think?

With the Beta FahCore_17, there are reports that on Windows Vista or higher, a single CPU/Core is used when folding on Nvidia GPUs. If you are using Windows XP, then the CPU Usage is very low. If you are using Windows 8, check the CPU Usage in the Details tab in Task manager instead of Processes tab as it does report a higher value (MS bug I think).

A prime number (2, 3) can be either odd (3) or even (2). The reason we don't use large prime numbers is that some projects fail to run with those numbers. In simple terms, Projects with small number of atoms can't "divide" by 7 as 7 is too big but can be "divided" by 2 easily so 7 is a "bad" number for that project. Generally, any number below 8 should work fine on most projects. There are reports that some fail on 7 so we try to avoid assigning those projects to those systems. Hope you have a better understanding now :)

Just started with everything, properly. Will run it when not gaming/recording. Is there a way to disable web client btw?
