I'm running Vista and will be ordering the upgrade today. What are the recommendations? I know W7 is loved and W8 is hated but I am also looking forward to future possibilities like DX12 and so on which when that comes I doubt W7 will support it but W8 likely will.
I'm not a fan myself, but you can test it to see how you get on. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx Put it on a spare hard drive, unplug your current one before starting, just in case it tries to upgrade you.
Windows 8 is great. You only need to get used to the new start menu. Windows 8 has some nice new features too, like the ability to pause a file transfer.
If you're on the fence over which to get....try the 90-day Enterprise evaluation first. That way, if you find you don't like it for whatever reason, it doesn't cost you anything.
I agree with the others, try the eval and see what you think. Personally, while I feel Win 7 is great, I actually like Win 8 more at this point. Win 8 still has some rough edges and some things will make you wonder why MS chose do to certain things the way they did, but overall I really like Win 8 and am looking forward to seeing where it goes from here (with Windows 'Blue' not too far off.)
Windows 8 hands down. Don't listen to the scaremongering by people stuck in the past and who are too small minded to adapt to change.
Your OS in your stats says '7' noob. lol Making a choice on what OS to run is just that, a choice. I decided to stay on 7. Does that make me 'small minded'? Be careful with your answer.
It depends. Try for yourself,it is the best deciding factor. windows 7 is a fine OS,stable and optimized. Windows 8 has its quirks, but also more optimized under the hood. Some are loving it,some are hating it.
If you don't mind having to get used to the new menu (which you don't have to rely on that much anyways), get Windows 8, it does alot of things better then 7.
Windows 7 gets my vote, Works well with everything and is widely supported, If it aint broke im not going to fix it.
This discussion happens when any new OS comes out. Some adopt it right away and others don't bother until later.
I look at it like this. Windows 7 is just Windows 7 and can't actually do a few things Windows 8 can (Metro Apps), and it can't be made to run like Windows 8 (in case you end up liking the Modern UI). On the other had Windows 8 can do everything Windows 7 can do, and if you don't like the new modern UI it can be made to look and act just like Windows 7. --- Simply put, with Windows 8 you can use a single free application (ClassicShell) to make it look and act just like Windows 7, but it gets all the security/other updates that Windows 8 has. Now I know some will say "well, you shouldn't need an application for that etc", true - but at least it can be done and it's quick and easy. --- So Windows 7 is just Windows 7, but Windows 8 can be Windows 8 and Windows 7 - so if they are both the same price it makes sense to go with Windows 8.
It just comes down to do you want to try it or not? Me personally, i tried it and couldn't get used to it. I might try it again soon with a proper start menu. I did like many new features however, it was just the interface i didn't like and full screen option menus but that was in beta, that stuff couldn't have all made it to retail right?
For that you can use tera copy. You can also queue various files and it'll transfer files one by one ensuring max transfer speed.
