    with recent update released...
I dont know if its because it old benchmark, driver related but I get less fps in windows 8 then in windows 7

    windows 8 score is 25100
    windows 7 score is 26900

same driver version used and same settings.
test score for return to proxycon

    windows 8 fps 74

    windows 7 fps 87

when the rest of the benchscore are the same with windows 7 being ahead.

btw its even faster in WinXp.

I guess its api bottleneck, since its -dx9 "emulated" in vista and later..

DX9 layers are the same for Windows 8 and 7 since it wasn't updated since 2010 i think.
Return to Proxycon is a graphics test with focus on video memory. I can tell Windows 8 is not too good with the memory in general, not from 3DMark06 but from memory benchmarks and 3DMark11 that gives lower CPU scores because of this.

But its not native like in winxp, that's why i said its "emulated".

Widnows vista and later has native dx10/dx11.

Yes, but he asked 7 vs 8 and since both are 'emulated' this wasn't the reason for different scores.

It could be both api and wddm 1.2.. I noticed 3dmark2011 is a little slower too, esp. by combined score.

Windows 8 is slower in pretty much everything except the time it requires to boot. Why do you thing that is the only thing they talk about on review sites and such? Was the same when Vista came out, XP was faster everywhere so no benchmarks between those two on most sites.

I'm really happy that Valve is pushing for Linux gaming because the trend of Windows getting slower with each new version isn't a good one from a gamer point of view. Or from anyones point of view for that matter.
