Average Selling Prices of Hard Disk Drives after Floods

The truth is that the old HDD will become obsolete in time whit the new SDD pushing hard, so they want to make as many money as they can, and then make the move but in max 3 years i think they need to go under 40 or they will not sell them.

 

SSDs are only good for PCs and low i/o servers. Where I work, SSDs were used in a server and they showed signs of failure within a couple months, where servers with HDDs have been lasting for years.

 

My 5.5TB HDD space(1x3TB, 1x2TB and a 500GB) are full. I have like 50Gigs left. So I was thinking about the 4TB also,
but for the reasons below I ordered another Seagate 3TB a week ago.

I can get from the e-shop I buy a Seagate 3TB(ST3000DM001) for €110,90 and the 4TB Hitachi 7K4000 for €209,90. Really? 99euros difference?

Let's see: 4TB GB/$ ratio: 0.0524c/per GB against the 3TB ratio: 0.0369c /per GB. That translates to almost 42% more expensive per GB. No thank you.

When I bought it on 07 June 2012 the Seagate's 3TB(ST3000DM001) price was €143.90 btw.
That's a 22.93% price drop.

I could justify the the premium if it was faster/better overall, but the Seagate is as fast or even faster sometimes. Not counting reliability/24-7 usage scenarios btw.

We have an application server here with 6 SSDs in it that has been running non-stop serving about 300 people all day every day for years, as well as taking in EDI, satellite information, and a bunch of other stuff. Not a single drive failure.

 

What drives? Just curious

 

There are cheaper 4TB drives but you need to get the external USB 3 versions oddly!

£148 faster drive, has dropped in price, was around £170 in December iirc.

 

While it would be nice to see 1 TB drives back to the pre-flood price range, I for one can live with them at their current price point (~$70/TB). At least right now it's affordable if you must upgrade; particularly when compared to the $150/TB we had a year ago. :rpg:

 

Couldn't tell you now, the server is at another location as a failover as of a couple weeks ago

It's going to be some form of solid state. Drives with moving platters are not the future.

 

Yeah I saw those externals but I was specifically referring to internals that I can buy from trusted shops that ship to my location.

Although the Hitachi 4TB Touro Desk Pro looks tempting. I can get it from Amazon UK for £145.22(€171.60) incl. shipping. Hmm..

But the 3TB I got would serve me for now. Next HDD probably would be a 4TB.

 

Solid State harddrives are the future.... You can only perform read and write operations on a spinning platter but so fast....

 

+1 When they go mainstream, they will evolve. Like HDD's evolved in the years.

 

Mechanical drives will be around for a long while, they have their role. For my next build the primary drive will be a SSD, that's one thing for sure.

Falling demand for PCs will drop the prices soon enough anyway. Thank goodness for tablets.

 

Yeah in NZ a 500GB HDD is still $30 more than the pre-flood price.
