Hello Guys, I'm new here, my first post so forgive me if i'm posting this in the wrong section. I really need some good advice. I'm still owning a Dell XPS 720 (yeah, i know dell.. bluh...:bang but i bought it 5 years ago and it was awesome untill some time ago. I'm really starting to get troubles with playing videogames. Low FPS high GPU ussage. I'm playing on 1920x1080. I could turn the resolution lower, but you'll have to keep in mind, i have a 32 inch screen. so if i turned the resolution down, i see every pixel. and all the other details are allways on low, low or ultra low! My question to you is: Could I turn my framerate up if a added a second 8800GTX. second question: what about the power. would i need to buy a new powersupplierer. cause i've read somewhere those cards eat voltage (or watt) (again sorry, i'm new) i am planning on buying a new pc, but it will probably be around the end of the year, due the lack of money. so whats your oppinion, give my pc a little boost with a second 8800GTX or just sit it out and save up the money? Let me know guys, Thanks in advance! PBvB Dell XPS 720 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2,4 GHZ Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 786 MB 4GB of Ram Edit: 17-12-2013 Hello again, Well... it's the end of the year and I don't have enough money to buy a complete new PC. I've bought a 3D tv instead! freaking nice! But isn't it possible to buy a new mid-range video card which gives my pc a boost in gaming. (with AC4, BF4 and FC3 etc) what if i got the Club 3D Radeon HD 7950? or am i really outdated with my specs, should I just forget about it and buy a complete new one? Thanks in advance, Peter
Really honest opinion, just save as much as you can, and get everything brand new at the end of the year, plus new line GPU's(graphic cards) will come around summer or fall this year, so just get one of these.
It doesnt make any sense, to buy a new graphics card for such an old machine. EDIT: And if im right you are still on DDR2 RAM? If so, later this year DDR4 is going to come in use, so you would skip on DDR3 all together, just save the money for a brand new PC. Oh and when you do and decide to buy one, DO NOT BUY A PRE BUILT CONFIGURATION! Come over here on forums and we will all help you build a decent one for the money you saved.
ok, it makes no sense, your right! and yes i'm still on DDR2. I'm gonna follow your advice, just sit it out, save up as much as i can. I will defenitly come here for my new pc. Thank you so much for your fast and clear responses! pb
If you got another 8800GTX you wouldn't be any better off really, the new single gfx card ranges are well ahead of any old SLI system. Wait it out and save your money till the next tech comes in, and don't buy the flagship product like the 680, since we all found out a month later the 670 is pretty much the same for less!
OP...Get a cheap 1155 mobo, cheap ddr3 ram, cheap i3(sandy or ivy) HD7770 or Gtx650ti...Use your current case/ps... Live for Today..........
I ran 8800gtx sli with an old amd opty 170 at 2.8 ghz. you will get a boost, they are very power hungry. dont remember the min power requirements off hand. you may need a new psu. if you have to buy a new psu for a second 8800gtx, I wouldnt bother
These are the power supply requirements given by eVGA: http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=58051 The 8800 GTX is too old to be listed at: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/sli but eVGA lists a single card as needing 450W with 30A at +12V. I see a power draw listing of 170W online. That's plausible; two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors, so the card should draw more than 150W and less than 225W. A second card should take the PSU total up to 620W/44A. I'm impressed that the XPS 720 came with either a 750W PSU or a 1KW one. (Most of the Dell postings that I see are for systems with minimal 300W PSUs.) I dunno. The 8800GTX is four generations back, but I see them on eBay for $20.
Maybe you should reinstall your OS. 8800GTX should play a lot of games with medium settings up until 2011 or so. So unless youre trying to play bf3 or something like that, maybe there is something going wrong with your system. what games are you playing?
I all ready reinstalled my OS on a SSD. I'm trying new games like NFS Most Wanted and Far Cry 3. But even Sims is lagging a lot. (maybe cause i've installed all the expansions.)
Honestly your rig is okay for most games. As finding a used 8800GTX will be difficult I would just get a GTX 650 or GTX 660. You will gain a ton of GPU performance over your current card and then you can save to upgrade the rest of your computer later. even a used GTX 460 or 560 would use less power and have better performance than old SLI 8800GTX. Another thing I notice you have only 4GB ram, are you running windows 7? DDR2 is expensive now, but if you can find some for cheap upgrade to 6GB or 8GB. It can help in some more intensive games.
Do not get GTX 460 or 560 because it doesn't succeed high-end card(eg: 8800GTX) but yes 2 GTX 580 SLi.
Don't agree. Upgrades ~3 years: GF 6800 Ultra -> GF 8800 GTX/Ultra or 8800GTX SLi -> GTX 590 or GTX 580 SLi* ... If you get crisis then you may get single GPU/videocard.
you could get 8800 gtx for under 100$ and i might help just a bit. what's wrong having ddr? i have in my 2nd pc AMD Phenom II X4 940 2x GTX 280 and 8 gb ddr 2 ram and i can run all game tho no dx 11. But If you are planing to upgrade pc this or next year, save some cash. I bought my 2nd gtx 280 for like 90$ . 2nd 8800 should help you in small % :=)
