It's a terrible idea, BGAs are known to fall apart like crap when poor quality balls are used just like everything Sony and IBM have ever used for mass production (such as consoles). Even high quality ones eventually break down if highly stressed, which is what enthusiasts do. Guess what the main two causes of the PS3 YLOD were, you guessed right, broken BGA connections on the GPU and/or CPU. Breaking pins rarely happens since it's on the motherboard now.

That's not taking into consideration Intel will severely limit OCing if not kill it off completely, they have literally no competition. AMD CPUs will be something of a novelty toy by the time Haswell comes around, it will be like what's in tablets now.

Lets hope they dont use poor quality.
After all, they have a reputation to uphold, so I cant imagine they will.
Its inevitable that permanent CPU connections is going to happen some day, its more a matter of if it can be avoided in 2014 and deferred to later.
The pins will get so numerous, so small and so high speed that movable (non solid) mechanical connections will be impractical at some point.

Yep, I imagine something along these lines will happen too.
They (or motherboard mfrs) have to provide different value products without having massive inventory costs/waste.
Without the ability to replace the CPU, another method of providing different value products will be needed.

My thinking is that they will stop or limit overclocking so they can sell unlock codes.
This way they can put more or less the same chip on every board with no or limited overclocking and depending what you pay, you will get x speed CPU.
They have already toyed with unlock codes before, perhaps as a precursor to what is now being proposed in 2014.

You never know, after all on Ivy Bridge chips instead of using solder between the CPU and lid they used dog crap.

They were reliable though, it just gave them a minor bad rap among some overclockers.

Here's hoping that this DOESN'T happen. If not AMD will be getting a lot more of my business, assuming they're still here.

AMD will have the same issues if they remain competitive.

If anything it will be like that for low power consumption/office PCs and OEMs will be the ones most affected. If they go all out .. I hope Apple will be a viable option at that time.

Depends on what you mean by reliable. They should have had more OC potential than Sandy Bridge, but they had less. That's a serious failure as far as I'm concerned.

If Intel really go BGA I will seriously buy AMD out of spite if they have anything remotely viable available.

I think if intel do this, your avatar will stomp on those cpu's and that will be the only way of upgrading... lol :3eyes:

Its is potentially bad news but i will not lose any sleep over it. As for the only options to upgrade ourselves being left to the enthusiastic level, what if i dont want to spend £200+ on individual components? I actually enjoy building my own mid range pc's.

What do the motherboard makers have to say about this?

While it could be a logical step, i can't say i would be a fan of this happening.

I doubt it would affect anything when it comes to function, but it would be another way of making PC's less "fun" for enthusiasts, could end up helping the market in the long run though.

What it will do is separate the PC market. The ones who can afford it and the ones who can't... I think it's stupid really, because it cuts out the mainstream market that go for best bang for the buck and those are usually the ones who buy most of the programs, games, software etc...

    RagDoll.
