What change they made that it can't be reversed? You mean about Ghz Edition, voltages etc?

The only thing I can assure you, when with a previous set some guys reported they've gained Mhz with less voltage, that time it didn't work for me.

With this latest driver ( 19 July ), it truly works... For example, I couldn't play BF3 at 1Ghz with less than 1.068 ( 1.031 default ). It would crash sooner or later. Now I play fully stably with 1.056!

No crashes on browsing with HWA, no grey screens... I'm pretty sure, this 12.8 set is gonna be great.

I cannot tell you about Crossfire, though.

i have to agree, ive not had a single issue with the 12.x july19 drivers.

SOSE used to grey bar on me with 12.6/12.7. not with 12.x

the issue hes referring to is an internal driver change to the way CGN handles PCIe power states. If you have an older board, a bios update will be necessary to be compatible with the new power scheme. If they revert the driver, they will Break the GHZ editions.

Yup, so i had to swap to Nvidia, as no new BIOS has been released for my board to fix it, so my board was no longer compatible with my 7970, unless i stuck to drivers prior to 12.6 :)

AMD were able to get Vista drivers out before its release, where as Nvidia couldn't, they couldn't even get them out on Vista release, they had to recall all their 8 series cards, or they would have been done for false advertising, as they were saying they were Vista compatible, when they were not, they only worked in XP, there was hell, everyone was buying 8 series cards for Vista, but they couldn't use them, they didn't get their Vista drivers out, until about 3 months later, so its swings and roundabouts. :)

MSDN release is tomorrow, so no doubt AMD will release their drivers tomorrow.

AMD still, technically, has until October 26 to release WHQL drivers to the public as that's the official public release of Win8.

Do I (too) have to worry with my HD 7870 from Gigabyte (factory OC to 1100MHz on core)?? :3eyes:

I didn't know it was so serious. You've ASUS M/B too... I'm pretty sure there was a BIOS update specifically "improve stability" in relation to GPUs... I don't know if this was the reason or something completely different...

If your on later drivers than the 12.6's, and not getting black screen crashes with 100% graphics card fan, requiring a hard restart, then no.

I have a asus rampage IV extreme with latest bios and I get this on the latest driver? Your trying to tell me I need a new board? No where that I have read (stated by AMD) that this issues is because of a MB bios. The only issue stated by amd about a bios update is for the sleep issue. If I am wrong show me where this is stated.

Hi ppls, Ive been having hard locks on my 7970 for the past few weeks since installing a new OS with 12.6 these happen at random times , usually while browsing.

From what you are saying Rich guy, there is a need for a new bios for compatibility with the new drivers , which is not available.

Are my only options to do as you have and switch camps, run old 12.4 drivers or harrass gigabyte to put out a fix for the motherboard bios?

if not, its probobly not the same issue.

The card is watercooled, fans arent connected.

But I am getting the same symptoms, Gray screen, Stripped screen.

I am capped atm so Im waiting for the 12.4 to redownload (soooo slow) to confirm that its the driver, but I didnt have any of these issues with my previous windows install with 12.4 .

I've had that with the 19 July drivers too, but the ones posted here:
    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=366904

(using the mod by Asder00 listed further down for all cards)
works flawlessly for me, despite the driver having the 'same version' (they are different though, later file builds).

This driver however isn't signed, so had to be installed manually etc...

What is does show though is that the issues people are having will probably be fixed in the upcoming driver release. The real question now is when OpenGL 4.3 support is added, since Nvidia has already released a beta driver for that.

People complaining about Windows 8 support must remember Windows 8 has NOT been released, and the release preview is NOT meant for daily use computers. This means AMD technically don't have to release a Windows 8 driver to the public before the official release date, although they will release a full Windows 8 driver before then due to OEM providers etc.

By 'not released' I mean just that, I don't mean that it hasn't been finalised and 'downloadable'. Release preview is 'not released'.

I suspect AMD may stick to the naming schedule, as in 12.8, but the name now reflects the month it is released in, not that the driver is that months driver. This means there could be say, a 12.8, and the next officialised driver be 12.10.

    I hope not...

OMG... Yes I have this problem (random crashes with fans at 100% and black/grey screens, but with 12.5/12.6 AMD official drivers...

Now (July 12.7/12.8 beta drivers) I don't have any crashes, even after OC...

I really don't know what to do... I don't have cash for GTX 670 (GTX 660 is not an option for me), and GTX 500 series are too old and are eating too much power etc...

So I will wait for next drivers and will see if it will have ANY problems, if so... well, I will have to say goodbye AMD :-/ :wanker:
