I know i talked about purchasing nvidia only but after some more research, I have finally narrowed down to-
    GT440 1GB DDR3
    9800GT 1GB DDR3
    AMD Radeon HD6670

    please suggest one..

I think any of the three would do the job, actually. But take the advice of chandranath:
I would also suggest going with the much newer DX11 440. I am using a 550m (144 shaders @ 823MHz, 1145MHz vRAM) and play things like skyrim at high settings (actually, almost everything Ultra) in 1080p rather well. I'm not familiar with the games you mentioned, but since Skyrim is typically a game used in reviews and benchmarks, I think it's a fair comparison.

I can vouch for the GT 440. My friend has the 1 GB GDDR5 version and he plays these games on a 17" monitor with the same resolution with ease.

    Battlefield 3
    Crysis 2
    NFS Hot pursuit

And if your Core 2 Duo 2.2 Ghz is the E4500 then you have the same processor my friend has.

And the prices of the GT 440 have dramatically dropped since last year as it is reaching its 1 year mark since being released.

    Advantages:
    1. Low power consumption (doesnt need a power connector)
    2. Fast
    3. DX11

A good card for 17" monitors actually

Just make sure to get the GDDR5 version though

Personally, without second thought, I'd get a used 460GTX. It shouldn't be difficult to find for 100$ or even less... 130$ for a brand new...

Handle it like an investment. This card is truly a small diamond. Meanwhile, at your resolution, it will keep up loooong time. I have it on my back-up PC and thus, I suggest it without any doubt.

The problem with buying used video cards off craigslist or eBay is the failure rate. There's simply no way to tell when the card is going to die or what it's been through. A friend of mine got one off CL and it died less than 3 months later. Then he got yet another and it's lasted over 2 years.

But if you can find ANY GTX for under 100 bucks, you have a diamond indeed -- regardless of how many miniature cracks might be building within. ;-)

You will need more then 1gb system ram before you try to run any modernish game.

True, I have the E4500. I am really inclined towards the GT440. The DDR3 version is for 5400 and the DDr5 for 6400 INR. Is DDR5 worth it, especially for 1280x1024...?

Hey everyone, there's a guy at school who keeps telling me that i can't have a DDR3 or DDR5 card with DDR2 RAM. Is this really true..? It sounds like a myth, IMHO...

That's right, it's nonsense. The vRAM is used by the graphics subsystem independently of the system RAM.

    That's bullsh!t.
Sounds like someone who can't tell the difference between a CPU and a computer casing.

GTX 460 beats out a GTX 550Ti :) I'd go for a GTX 460 1GB card. Plays a lot of games nicely still.

In mainstream online sources, a Radeon 7750 can be had for around $115, a GTX 550-Ti around $125, and the GTX 460 roughly $150.

I am not a big AMD fan, but it seems of these three new options, the 7750 is closest to your price range. However, since you wanted something under $100 that can play games acceptably at 1280x1024, all of these are not only significantly above your maximum price, but are overkill for most games at that resolution.

The GT 440 sells for about $75 in the same places. The DDR3 variant is unlikely to pose a big problem for you, because at your maximum resolution and acceptable game settings, the jump makes surprisingly little difference in terms of playable framerate in the vast majority of cases -- especially considering the increased cost. But even if you do opt for the GDDR5 version, the price will still be well under $100.

Therefore, I'd still recommend the GT 440.
