Due to my OC, my VRM's and RAM get a tad warm so i got that Antec fan to keep em cool :)

Oh, it's been years since I posted in here.

Anyhoo, I built a new file server for media storage. Used some old parts I had lying around (motherboard, case, harddrives), bought some used parts (CPU, RAM, PSU, GFX) and bought some new stuff (PCIe controller, heatsink, fans, harddrive).

    Running:
    WHS 2011
    Abit IP35 Pro
    4GB Micron mem
    Intel Pentium E5300
    Crap GeForce 6600 PCIe
Adaptec 1430 PCIe 4-port RAID controller
    OCZ StealthXstream 400W
And the old Chieftec Dragon case which is cut to pieces due to previous WC projects. Found it in my parents attic. :D Lots of room, I figure I should be able to fit around 20 HDDs in there with some easy mods.

Storage: 4x 2TB, 3x 1,5TB, 1x 1TB and 1x 1TB eSATA. Storage drives are pooled through FlexRaid with 2TB parity. 1TB drives are OS and dump drives. Will expand storage as soon as HDD prices start dropping!

It's fugly, but it'll be positioned in a storage room where no one will see or hear it.

Dude that's a HUGE amount of storage. I thought I was bad for having 5 TB in my main rig, but Jebus, that puts mine to shame. Gunna throw a home server together from old IDE bits I have lying around, probably end up around 1TB in total. Messy, but hell, it's free.

Evidently it isn't enough because I barely have any free space left. As soon as HDD prices start to normalise I will add a couple of 3TB drives. I primarily use it for media storage (Bluray rips) which I stream in the living room on a media streamer.

I love putting old hardware to use. I've had this motherboard lying around for years looking for something to do with it.

Love how you needed to get that SATA controller cause you didn't have quite enough on-board ports to use for all the drives.

And since I don't believe in SSDs... 4x300GB 10k 2.5inch drives (western digital) in raid 10.

... no idea why you don't believe in SSD's. not only fast as hell, but i'd rather have no noise, no heat, and no possibility of any sort of vibration than have 4 10k rpm drives in my case.

So so true.. I only have a single WD 1tb drive active in my new tower and the vibration and extra noise it can cause when trying to achieve maximum silence is actually quite prominent. SSD all the way.. I've thouroughly enjoyed my ssd experience thus far.

anyway, finally got time to take some photos so here is what I've been up to of late.

    First up, the before..

VS the Stacker 830.. my cat Pixel seems to approve!

I'm still trying to find a way to lessen the vibration of the WD drive.. its making the whole lower part of the bays make the chassis vibrate.. with the side panel on it causes a very audible low hum. I may just be nitpicking though.

\/ Cool thanks for the tip!
