In case anyone missed it... http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7970-review/1 (also posted in frontpage news by mistake..but meh whatever...).
yea...quite the let down. To be honest I was expecting a lot more. Yea it's faster then the 580 in some games....but techpowerup tested a lot more games with it and the 580 is even or ahead in atleast half games tested. Doesn't have the huge leap in performance I hoped it would. I was planning on getting it but I think I will hold off an see what the 600 series holds.
wait what?! no more xdr2 ram??? @angmar is it the first time u see benchmarks from an unfinished gfx card? driver wise will give it quite a bit of performance increase, ive learned that in the past several times. Youre comparing a very mature (gtx580) driver wise gfx card with 1 that isnt even released yet.
This card is a beast. 1) The drivers were early beta so we should expect a MUCH higher performance in the months to come. 2) For me is VERY important Watt/FPS. Now a 7970 is rated (guru3d source) at 200 W, GTX 580 at 280W (guru3d source) so this is for me a big win situation. 70% power consumption of a GTX 580 with up to 40% more raw power is a double WIN. Every hampered brain should calculate here at least a Watt/FPS performance increase of around 55%:3eyes:. So yes AMD did it again, now give me a CPU to hammer this baby:banana::banana:.
The power consumption is indeed very impressive. This is good news for mobile and the next generation video game systems. Also the die size is impressive, at only 365 mm2. AMD could probably bump up the compute units to 48 when the 28nm process is more mature, and get 48 ROPs in the upgrade. Would be a nice refresh a year or two from now, though the GPU would be quite large at that point. Does anyone have confirmation if the HD 7870 and HD 7770 will include the new architecture?
I'm keen to see how the 7990 (NZ) performs....double the performance possible I wonder....? I think the initial MRP ($) is a little high though for the 7970.
The card has a lot of potential but i cant see new drivers giving it an extra 60fps in games to beat the competition.
I think it looks great but will be out of my price range, I don't need 150FPS in BF3 to enjoy it, I get 45-60 and it looks smooth.
Good luck waiting for them "good" amd drivers, also if you compare a 3gb 580 too it, their is like a 2fps difference, not good enough imo. i'll wait to see what nvidia can pull out of the bag. I DO like them power ratings though.
