a quality 550W is enough for ANY single gpu.

Got your Pm, OT- yes, what he says is the jist of it, 550W = enough.

This is of course factoring in a 30% CPU overclock, and a 10% VGA overclock.

I thought that that figure counted with no overclocking factered in?

ok the guy that calls people troll, remember him now. just like 750 watt is enough for sli 580`s

When VGA vendors specify a power requirement, they grossly overestimate, to compensate for a older, or less then adequate unit (inferior).
for a Solid unit; you can get away with a lesser wattage then what is given by AMD or Nvidia. GTX 570 SLI, for example, will run with a quality 750W.

To defend my self, i believed he was trolling, how many times must i clarify this?
i'm not as bad as it's made to be here. iv'e done alot of good for the enthusiast community.

I advise you take a look at my PSUcalc. if you doubt it, research it, i'm far from ill informed on this subject.

I go by guru 3d recommondation of 900 min for sli 580 myself.

Arrogance destroys the footholds of victory.

900W is to factor in HEAVY overclock and ease of mind, but speaking in a strict manner of 'what is sufficient' - GTX 570 SLI = 750W no overclocking, and 850W for overclocking.

    GTX 580 SLI = 850W with overclocking.

So, who do we blame when 550W PSU's start failing because they're overdrawn? And who stops at 10% on a GPU?

Sorry, but if you think wattage on a PSU is the sole determining factor....you shouldn't be recommending PSUs at all....

keep in mind, i said a QUALITY 550W, a nice unit won't go out if it's stressed out.

It's amperage, wattage, that determines appropriate output. and more in-depth technical stuff that determines quality.

I see you are skeptical of my claims and my presence hear, i suggest looking at things i posted not only here, but on various enthusiast communitys.

I am arrogant because I do not conform to some ones way of thinking? I am simply stating my own and guru 3d recommondation of psus. You do have some disclaimer on your calculator I presume. Like if something goes wrong you are not liable?

No liability, i said nothing of a hive mind thinking. you stated your opinion. but if you are suggesting it over my own, tis' fine. but i didn't make it as a PSU editor on ocn for my lack of knowledge.

    Please, stay on topic.

yes, I tend to be skeptical when you start posting garbage....

Power recommendations are not based on "older or less than adequate units"....they're based on power consumption of the component. It doesn't make any sense to suggest a power rating that can't produce enough amperage. A 550watt PSU has an absolute maximum of 45.8amps. If it's a typical 550watt unit, 250-400watts is available on the 12v rails. If you're using a GTX580 you leave a maximum of 100-150watts left to power the remainder of the system. If you include a Core i7 2600K, you're running out of wattage at stock clocks. A mild 10% OC on GPU and CPU would put you above the PSU's wattage ratings. Sadly, the Graphics card's own amperage requirement (42A) puts you above what the PSU is capable of producing on it's 12V rail(s). This would result in 1 of a few scenarios:
    A. PSU Failure
    B. Component Failure
    C. PSU and Component Failure

Being an "Editor" doesn't typically require any actual knowledge. Of course, Watt's law proves your "550watt is enough" theory to be wrong...

I've had this same discussion with others of higher reputation....the "average" computer with a GTX580 will overdraw a 550watt unit. In fact, based on amperage, a GTX580 will overdraw a 550watt unit....

BTW, who we're "talking with" makes little difference when proven electrical "laws" say they're wrong. It doesn't take a degree in astrophysics to know Watt's law.... Honestly, I'd suggest you go learn Ohm's Law and Watt's Law....maybe you'll understand why you're wrong afterwards.
