As some of you may know I'm a bit of a sucker for older hardware. Built myself a reasonably powerful "old" PC for playing "old" games on, and I'm constantly looking to improve the thing, as with my main rig. So todays question: What was the best GFX card (up to about 2004/2005) made for AGP? Current card is a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB, motherboard has an X8 AGP slot. I'm open to nVidia or ATi cards, and overclocking as well. Cheers BLEH!
im guessing the 6800 Ultra or 7900GS/GTX off the top of my head. Maybe some sort of X1900/950 or X1800
Best NV I think was the Gainward Bliss 7800GS+ 512MB, which was actually a 7900GT with an AC Silencer on it.. great card ..think I still have one sitting in a drawer somewhere ATI made an HD3650 for AGP too..
+1. The Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb was my first major pc gpu bought for gaming. Even though it was only 128Mb in size it managed to play Half-Life 2/ Counter-Strike Source fully maxed at 60fps... At the time I had around 512ddr2 ram & a $hitty AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core 2400 2.3GHz...
7800GS+ is a bit pricey, 6800's seem reasonably priced though, might go for one of those. Tempted to swap the Athlon XP for a Pentium 4 3.2 HT (Socket 478 version) as well, cos they seem to have a little more oomph to them, at the expense of the extra heat ofc. Advantage being I can get a decent aftermarket cooler for those, my Socket 462 board is missing the holes to mount most aftermarket coolers they made for it annoyingly.
Oh nm I miss-read the request... :bang: I'll just leave this here for ****s and giggles, thought you were looking for a new card to upgrade your old system. This one looks nice. 1 gig of Ram, dunno how much is actually useful. But it has current connectors - HDMI, DVI, D-Sub. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161337 If you go with this card there seems to be a hotfix you need with the regular driver for it - look for = 10-7_agp-hotfix_xp32_dd_ccc.exe
I'm basically looking for a "new-old" card if that makes sense. Something second hand a bit better than my 9800 Pro. @ Pill Monster: It's an Athlon XP 3200+ @stock. 2GB of DDR @ 400 MHz Problem being my board doesn't have the mounting holes used by many of the aftermaket coolers so trying to OC it would be rather risky.
It's a Barton. My parents have my old Abit An7 nF2 rig, it has a 2800 XP Barton and I also threw in a Radeon 9600 so they could watch movies and stuff. Makes a great internet surfing/Youtube MS Office system.. It's nice to see perfectly good older hardware being used instead of going to waste...
I found this chart from 2005 Nice list of model #'s http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/vga-charts-vii,1070-4.html
Benches suggest that the P4 ain't too much better than the AthXP, but a 6600GT/6800GT or similar would give the GFX a nice kick up the ass. Cheers for the input folks.
RE: AGP ....I can't remember exactly which card it is, but it's definitely an ATI. Maybe a 3 series possibly,.. Google it.
ATi x1950pro? Beast of a card, and the IQ was superb. Slapped one of those flower Zalmann coolers on in it the end (VF900-Cu iirc).
I use a Matrox Millennium G550 AGP in my dual PIII system. There are more than two video card companies.
Looking at benches that thing is only half as powerful as my old GeForce MX 400, and that was a terrible card.
I have a Gainward Bliss 7800GS+ 512MB in the cupboard that has been gathering dust for many years.. want it for a few peanuts? Used to play company of heroes maxed out with it. The card is an amazing clocker it uses a 7900 core chip not a 7800.
