    XFX 6950 2 gig
i just purchased a xfx 6950 2gig 256bit card, i was wanting to know if you guys think my current system will bottle neck this card while gaming.

Amd 965 over clocked to 4.0
    gigabyte 990xa ud3
    8gigs ddr3 1600 g skill rip jaws (8-8-8-24)
Corsair 650 watt (1 rail at 64 amps)
1 crucial m4 series ssd 64gig. (as boot drive, along iwht a intel ssd storage drive)
Im running windows 7 home edition.

and i am currently running at xfx 6870 1gig

(also, if i wont see a bottleneck, do you guys think ill see a vast improvement over my old card?)

thank you for your time and info.

You have three cards? I see an Ati 5770 in you rig and you mention the xfx 6870 in the post along with the 6950.

Anyway, you will see an improvement in performance at higher resolutions where the videocard itself will be the bottleneck. Check the performance charts that display different cards in he reviews on G3D to see by how much.

Some games need a lot of CPU power, sometimes more performance on a single or 2 cores.
So it depends on the game and settings you wish to use, check reviews.

If your current card is bottlenecked by the CPU, the 6950 wont improve the situ.

Well i had a 1055T at 3.5GHz and when i got a 560 Ti i had a very bad bottleneck. So considering that card is roughly the same speed and your cpu is also roughly the same speed in 4 or less thread apps i would say yes for most games.

Nah you should be okay for most games

Can you post some numbers about the differences in framerate? Also, what bottleneck are you referring to, cpu or gpu?

Cpu. crysis for example dropped below 40 fps on the 1055T and doesn't drop below 60 on this. Starcraft 2 fps over doubled, as did WoW. GTA4 went below 30 fps at times but now doesn't drop below 50 fps with heavily modded graphics. A lot of other games gained anywhere from 20-80% improvement in performance. This is all from upgrading my old 1055T to 2500K on a 560 Ti graphics card.

^^^I can also confirm this going from a qx9650 at 4ghz to SB

You had the 560 at that time? I can imagine an improvement with the 580, but the 560...

The 560 is more or less the same to my graphics card, more less than the same. Your CPU is also comparable to mine, even in the overclocks we put in. I never get a minimum framerate of 60 in Crysis, so how do you manage that? The link above is for Crysis Warhead, a game less stressfull on the graphics subsystem compared to the original Crysis you mentioned.

I'm not using in game config, i run a custom config that looks considerably better then ultra but runs faster. My old gtx 275 could get 30-45 fps in it easy.

Edit: also i have the Ti.

Using your config would yield better results then upgrading the videocard for the op. Can I conclude that an extra cpu upgrade is not that beneficial to the OP?

Edit: you stated before your 'gtx 275 could get 30-45 fps in it easy', but you also stated you used a 1055 and could barely reach 40 fps (post #8 in this thread). So, even I'm confused now. What would you recommend to the op now?

I said the 1055T dipped below 40fps at times with a lot going on and even got below 30 in a few bad spots and gpu load would drop to like 40-60% and 1 core on the cpu would be 90%+, its average in crysis was 45-60 fps with nothing going on. On my 2500K gpu load is 99% pretty much constant and it runs at 60-75fps average.

For the OP i would recommend saving for a SB build if as he says he is running a "xfx 6870 1gig", i wouldn't bother upgrading to a "xfx 6950 2gig".

His CPU will definitely not bottleneck a 6950.

I used to have an Athlon II X2 @3.7 and it powered my OC'd 6950 just fine, even BF3 ran mostly OK...
Being a dual core the X2 occasionally hit 100% load in BF3 (and ofc Crysis2 :p) causing stuttering and fps drops, however the GPU was constantly @ 99%...

With the X4 it runs smooth as glass at 65% load on all 4 cores, also improved min fps, but this is the only noticeable difference between the two CPU's...

Bottleneck no (since it's a stupid term). You will however have maxed out your platform's capabilities in some games. Anything excessively CPU demanding will bog down the framerate (but not because the GPU is being "limited", it's actually because the CPU isn't fast enough to calculate certain things at the same rate as others).

Of course the extent of this will be minimal. Sure, latest gen Intel will give a significant leap in these sort of scenarios, but even sandy bridge limits framerate in some games (Skyrim for example).
