So i bought this card that will arrive tomorrow, cause i sold my rig few weeks ago so i could get a siberian husky and a ps3 (for games that wont run well). My friend gave me hes old parts Q6600 and Asus P5Q Pro motherboard and 4gig of ddr2 ram. Only thing missing is a videocard (still have a case and PSU). So i was looking for cheap used card and got a GTX285 for only 80 euro's (imo that's very good price?) My question is are there more ppl here with this card, and does it still do great job at games to date? Like Crysis 2 and maybe BF3 Alpha Trial?
Check the Guru3d GTX 560 Ti review. Most titles tested have the 285 as a comparison, so this should give you an idea of its performance these days. Seems like it's still a pretty able card. You shouldn't have much problems in most games if you lower the graphics details.
Well, lack of DX11 is kind of a big deal these days. I would say look for GTX460 which is about as fast as GTX285, DX11 support and newer. GTX470 would be even better, but might cost a bit more. Or GTX560 even better, but used ones are hard to find.
my gtx 275 plays crysis 2 at high dx9 settings and the bf3 alpha trial played good too my system isnt far from yours, and with consoles still holding PC gaming bk i wont have to upgrade yet and to me dx11 is a gimmick like dx10 was lol
No it's not. Still only a handful of games utilise it properly. And most of the benefits are in the form of better performance but the difference isn't big to DX9/10. As for tessellation, it drains performance quite a lot, you need a high end card for it. How is this relevant? He already got the 285, he just wants to know how good it is.
I don't think the GTX 460 can be found that cheap. It is still sold at twice that price. How much cheaper can you find a used one? The GTX 460 has similar performance with that of the GTX 285, plus the DIRECTX11 support and the lower power consumption. Overall, 80 Euros is a reasonable price for a used GTX 285 right now. I'm still OK with my GTX 280 more than 3 years after I got it. Never had a card for this long after the MXIC 1MB ISA I had with my 386.
It was the best card for that price where i got it from. Rest were GTX260's mostly and 280's 275s for the same price. I hope i can get the Q6600 overclocked, i play black ops and bc2 wich need fast processor. Gonna use my old be quiet dark rock advanced cooler wich i had for my old core i5 750.
Still use my gtx285 on my spare pc att my parents. (q9550@3.4 4gb) And tbh it still plays all the games i play on my main pc. Only differen is that it runs them in dx9 and maybe ill have to lower some settings. bfbc2 and bo runs fine Still a good card.
What's the resolution on your monitor? It's odd nobody asked. I retired my 275 overclocked well above the stock 285 (740 MHz core) so the performance was similar and I played everything well with high settings on 1680x1050. So you will play everything OK but you will have to OC the quad above 3GHz.
GTX 285 is equivalent to a GTX 460 1GB, but without DX11 and heats up a lot more... so if you don't play DX11 games, it is still a very good card, but the downsides are there and 80$ is too expensive for it. 50$ would be a better price for it.
Well, if you already bought it then it's kind of pointless to suggest getting a newer model. To be honest though I think you're fine even without DX11 if you're not looking for the best visuals possible with the highest fps in the world. If you just want to play and enjoy games at decent settings I don't see any problem.
Im running 1080p, and well i used to be graphic whore But medium settings look fine too or console graphics like. edit: got the card, im happy with it CoD games run like a charm. And now waiting for the BF3 Open Beta this month.
@ reduced graphics details, it will do. Its still ok just don't get your hopes high for detailed graphics in games like BC3, Skyrim and other future releases bec. the GPU requirements never remain constant. Once DX11 gets polished, the GTX285 becomes more of a dinosaur. Newer games tend to run hotter and more demanding and the 285 will become a virtual microwave oven soon.
Unless you have a need for the "latest and greatest" or "maximum graphics settings", the GTX285 is still a decent card. Given the limited number of DX11 titles...I don't see lack of DX11 support as being a "big deal these days".
