Hey just wondering have an older system but when I am running the Far Cry 2 bench marks it seems no matter if SLI is enabled or not I end up running almost identical frame rates. My CPU usage does top out at nearly 100% but want to find out if this is normal with this setup. I am running the game at 1920x1080 8x AA and everything on ultra settings hitting an average of 50fps

Your CPU usaage does indicate a bottleneck yes. Near 100%

    No. Simple as that.
I request a ban for tommy for infinite stupidity.
Overclock both cards and see if you get more FPS in a different game. If you do, you don't need a better CPU, if you don't, wait for Ivy Bridge at least. Maybe SLI isn't working correctly? Look at the GPU usage.

I think Tommy was spot on. CPU bottle-necking is mostly apparent in multi-GPU configurations and looks like the case here. If there is anyone needing a ban its you Alpha for you're flaming response.

well I prefer to go overclocking GPU root to see if CPU bottleneck the cards

Sry alanm, next time i will just shout "Bottleneck!!1! go out and waste some 100$/€ for a new CPU now!!" like most of you guys do. Ever thought about a faulty GPU or an issue with the driver and the game so that SLI isn't kicking it at all or isn't just working properly?
Too many brainless "BOATLNEK!" zombies out there...

For FarCry2 you need at least a i5/i7 nehalem cpu (7X0, 8X0, 9X0) to eliminate that bottleneck.

Well i rather OC the CPU to see if that actually reduces the bottleneck...

A CPU bottleneck implies that no matter how much you overclock or upgrade your GPU you will not get more FPS. IMO overclocking the GPU/GPU's is the fastest and easiest way to tets it.

overclocking the GPU is easier and don't need to restart the PC just playing with
afterburner . and more importantly the it seems the CPU is already overclocked
so it'd be a little harder to overclock it more specially if you don't have a good cooler

Thanks for the post everyone I think I will try OCing the GPUs to see if that does increase the frame rates just to test it out.

And that's even on a very low resolution (=CPU is even more important) :D

You should also monitor your GPU usage and clocks for both cards with GPU-Z or MSI Afterburner.

TROLL, You want to ban me for being right? I have extensive experience with socket 775. even my quad qx9650 is holding back my 480 big time. I also ran a 580 and 295 and the cpu was holding them back BIG TIME. Do guru3d and its members a favor and find another forum to lurk. +1 on your ban

I have a similar experience with my E6300, holding back this 4870 quite a bit too, I know, its not a quad, but its still a socket 775 cpu

dude my qx9650 at 4ghz holds video cards performance back. clock to 4.1 fps go up, 4.2 same. problem is 4ghz needs 1.45v.

QX9650 should not hold back a single GTX480/580, if we talk about multy GPU system thats the other story...

An old sk775 quad will hold back a single high end card such as a 480/580. Socket 775 is behind 3 newer CPU sockets. It is long in the tooth.

C2Q/QX are still faster than Phenom II clock to clock, so its still capable of running single GPU systems.

Socket 775 are still holding its own.

Buy hey, there is still people like you that needs to have i7 990X so they are not "bottlenecked".
