Depth of field must be one of the useless features in games. Doesn't our brain already have that function? :)

It would be useless if games somehow could produce (3D) depth enough to trick our brain. But even with that, it's almost impossible since we are looking at a flat screen.

And it's not useless in cinematics, it makes it look like a camera is filming everything. Very neat.

Doesnt it focus on the foreground, and blurs everything on the background ?

In movies or games cutscenes I even understand, because the director is trying to focus the action in one particular spot.
But in games it's useless because you can't focus two objects at the same time, you focus on one thing but the rest is out of focus, even without dof.

beautiful, simply beautiful, and it runs pretty good, probably much better with a core i7 cpu, but that's another story, 1080p ultra settings blur on medium 30-50fps most of the time.

Could someone, please take a shot between extreme dx9 and ultra dx11 to see how much fps difference there is?

Dude just look at your screen right now and everything behind is blurred lol. Anyway DOF only works pretty much when Alcatraz look at his gun or hand or a little through ironsight.. Otherwise I don't really see it elsewhere.

It's really natural in Crysis 2 imho

    Here you go.

I stuck to this spot as it's the default load point i'm at so i could get results from the exact same place everytime, all shots at 1080p (resized for the forum).

    Dx9 all extreme.
Dx11 all extreme (i redid this one as the GPU usage was only 93%, at the normal 98% it was 65fps, the screen didn't grab for some reason).
    Dx9 ultra.
    Dx11 ultra.
Dx11 extreme + high res textures (i redid this one as the GPU usage was only 93%, at the normal 98% it was 65fps, the screen didn't grab for some reason).

Dx11 ultra + high res textures.

It seems simply enabling DX11 on extreme drops a few FPS, on that scene i lost 3 just from the switch.

Would have liked a better place for the screens, i'll probably do this again when i get a better save point.

Something i'll say from my own shots, on some areas of the game (like the one i posted), it's amazing how little difference there is between DX9 extreme and Dx11 Ultra with the HRT pack visually (apart from a big FPS hit).

There are loads of areas where the change is really noticable but it's kinda sad that lots of areas have no real difference at all.

^^ yeah modern games use FP16 mostly for the quality.. All Fermis does FP16 at full speed but GF100s broken only.. OTOH Radeons does half rate altough they have more TMU's, they are mostly underutilised because of VLIW4/5 arch..

that graph shows best case scenario for Radeons but in real world applications they are not good that much.. official AMD response about average shader utilisation for VLIW5 SKUs is %65 so multiply those numbers with 0.65, though AMD increased efficiency with VLIW4 but still far from nVidia's.. so new GCN should change something here and there pretty much..
