Yawns I personally never used more than about 200gb's of storage even though I have a 1tb hd. What I would like to see is much faster mechanical and cheap hard drives since the last few years the ssd's seem to be so darn expensive.
Well that's just you, I've already exceeded 2TB in storage (external, PC only has 1TB, in total I have 4,5TB worth of HDD's).
Yeah, I am constantly running out of space. They probably were able to do this cause they grabbed Samsung up.
How you guys running out of space with tb hard drives etc ? You must keep movies on your computer is all I can think of. Personally when I want to watch a movie I watch it on a TV not a computer Anyways to each his own I guess.
my system has 2 3TB WD drives, 5TB already filled lol mainly installed games (too many) + music + pr0n blah blah even though i do burn lots of dvds, theres never enough space. i'm buying another 3TB this month, maybe 2 even, i stopped buying Seagate a few years ago, but i might buy one and see how it goes.
Lots of animes, blu-ray is large in size, an old fashioned 5-6GB 26 episode anime is now up to 30-35GB, but it's worth it on my 24'' monitor for the increased clarity, and FLAC audio. DVD movies I burn, though, don't stay on long. The rest is music. Though yeah, sometimes I do feel like my space is just disappearing...I clear it up and make space and it disappears even when I download nothing, even though I clear cache, backups, ect, the works. I have a 1TB + 750GB I use, and both are pretty filled. Next I want to grab a large 2TB HDD + 128GB SSD for my Windows files and games I am playing at the moment. However...a 128 GB SSD of quality that is worth it, or...I could buy 5 1TB Mechanical HDD's for that price, RAID them, and be nearly as fast, WITH 5TB of storage space. So, at the moment, not really worth it. Also, I've been hearing alot of horror stories. They said that since SSD's have been released, 70% have failed after 1 year! I know they're new tech, but I some them to become more stable.
as far as I understand, they use technology that they acquired when they bought samsung for this. except that instead of making a huge and fast 4 platter internal drive, they put them in an external box. Yay for less choice between manufacturers!
Too bad they only plan on putting 3 platters in each HDD to start. No one wants a 3TB drive, that's so 2008, or at least should have been, progress is disturbingly slow. Stupid BIOS issues, you'd think they would have predicted using the same type of BIOS from the 80s would result in problems later.
if i could buy a 20 TB drive i would, even for over 1000$ or something, i agree that 3TB which seem like a lot of space is actually proof that tech is moving quite slow, by now there should've been 10tb+ drives. i need space, 3tb is the minimum i'd buy nowdays.
i don't keep any movies on my hard drive, or porn, and i am using about 1.5 tb of hard drive space, my steam folder in itself is 533 gigs, and i don't even have half the games installed
I don't keep all my games installed on my hard drive. I just keep a few that I am playing at the time. I also do a fresh install of my os every 3-6 months so that's why I never used over 200 gb Guess if I installed all my software I would need about 100tb's of storeage.
I don't have all my movies or games or anything on my hard drives and I'm using like 4TB. I'd probably be running out to buy the highest capacity HDD right now if I weren't on a preposterous bandwidth cap which limits me to what would have been reasonable only in the early 90s.
The problem with having bigger drives is that you'll lose A LOT more data if they fail, therefore, you need at least two of these drives
I buy for speed first, storage space second. I can't imagine using more than 400GB total. Bought a 1TB SATA3 HDD awhile ago just because it was fast and I wanted a bit of future-proof space for when SATA3 became the norm. Still have yet to fill more than about 200GB of it. Hopefully these 1TB platters prove to be speedy, I might consider spending money on one if so.
I am the same way. I have a Seagate 500GB single platter drive and the most I have used so far is 150GB's. I only have the game installed that I play as that makes sense. My music collection is only 10GB in total which is still over 2000 songs. The people that need TB+ are basiaclly digital hoarders which is no differenmt then those pigs on the TV show Hoarding!
Hopefully you don't have Western Digital. I'd rather own a pig. At work I've seen hundreds of WD's and the old Maxtors fail. Yet in my lifetime I've probably only see about 5 at the very most fail. I know which I'd rather have.
