Just a note, AHCI didn't work with any of the Intel chipset drivers I tried, I removed them all and let windows install its own and its worked fine ever since.

    Trim also works on IDE

    Quote:
TRIM is non-specific to either SATA controller mode, and will work equally well in both IDE and AHCI-mode. Benchmark Reviews will soon publish a detailed report that illustrates the recovery levels for each SSD controller tested here.

I have been hitting a wall this last week on getting the BIOS to accept the AHCI setting.
I cloned my HHD onto the SSD while in IDE mode.
When that was completed, I then made the changes in the Registry - In one forum the Reg edits suggested was for msahci & pciide, amdsata, & amdsbs - all set the "Start' to 0.

When I reboot and enter the BIOS and change to AHCI I get a error:
“Re-boot & select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”

The AHCI Bios settings are > Main / Storage Configuration
Configure Sata as - (3 options: IDE / Raid / AHCI).
    And
Advanced / Onboard Devices / Controller Mode: (2 options : IDE or AHCI)

I do not see as quoted above ..." "Integrated Peripherals" and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE."

    My Sata Port Order
    1. Not detected
    2. Seagate Drive
    3. OCZ drive
    4. Not detected
    5. Not detected
    6. Not detected

    & the Boot order is
    1. Sata - OCZ
    2. Sata - DVD
    3. ATAPI – CD
    4. Floppy

I have spent a lot of time on this and have assits form other sites, but to no avail-
    Any suggestions?
(for one - should I return the '0's back to 3's for pciide, amdsata, & amdsbs ?

    Thx!!

the SSD (OCZ) - I had it cloned from my Hitachi HHD - which is no longer connected- its in the closet.

The Seagate is a drive for my back ups. There is no OS on it.

Swap your drives around so the OCZ is in port #1 or #2...as long as it's the first HDD at least.

If it still doesn't boot then you prob have a corrupt/non existent boot sector or MBR. What did you clone it with?

    From Microsoft, might help you:

This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To resolve this issue yourself, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
    Exit all Windows-based programs.
Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

    Well success,
    The Short version:

    1. Left msachi & pciide at 0 & Changed iastorv to 3.
    2. unplugged the Edrive (the HDD) from the motherboard.
    3. back to BIOS & under Advanced / Onboard Devices / Controller Mode:
Changed From AHCI back to IDE.
    4. Rebooted PC and this time able to boot to Windows.
    5. installed iata_enu.exe – I gather this is the 10.1.0.88 version ?

    Now the questions are :
    1. How to use the IRST?

    2. What is the Advanced / Onboard Devices / Controller Mode & why was this set up only successful when it was set at IDE. Seems it should be in AHCI mode?

    3. Why does it seem my C drive is using more significant space each day?
For example today before I started this process the used space for the C drive was 58.3 now its 61.9GB – leaving 49.9 or Free space.
And last nite used space was 54.4 GB

I would like to add after you followed this guide, the best is to install Intel's Rapid Storage Technology for Intel based computers. Then disable msahci and enable iastor the same way as you did with msahci :)

    Update:
Not sure how or why (I think I have a bad motherboard) - I was only able to set the Bios and the PC to boot via RAID. For what reason AHCI is not possible.

    Question:
If I want to return to the IDE mode, what is the process?
I am thinking that uninstall the IRST from within windows,
Then in Regedit, change MsAhci and IastorV back to 3 and IDE to 0.
Shut down and unplug my back up drive, leaving only the drive with the OS connected.
Then restart - but into the BIOS and there change from RAID to IDE.

    About right?
    thx

hmmm- given the article is from 2008 wonder how appropriate with SSD & Window 7 machines?
    Thanks though
