I've been studying the stats page for the last few years or so, and it seems despite it's age, CS is gaining more population, rather than losing.

It's insane, isn't it? We have tons of new games release, some exactly the same, some better, most worse, but most people still play CS & CS 1.6 a ton.

It is the most played non-MMO game on the PC, and has been since forever. 1.6 used to have a lead over Source, but now they're even.

Roughly 140,000 people are play CS right now.

CS is really insane, lol. I keep expecting to see the numbers one day just be near the bottom, but they never are.

They're not even decreasing, it's actually increasing. Last year it was an average of 50,000 people on CS:S, and 65,000 on CS 1.6, now it's like 70,000 for each at peak times.

How the heck is it still growing? No commercials, no sales on it, really, no new adds, or even major content additions...it's only real update was a move to Orange Box in it's entire life span and it's enjoying the most popular FPS game on PC spot since it's inception.

Quite funny when you think about it. All these companies trying to spend fortunes to take over the PC FPS market, and don't come close to what some modder made and Valve tweaked abit, for 1/1000th of the cost of these big name games.

The guy who made CS, is making a new game, somewhat like CS, but with a few tweaks. I imagine if people realize it's from the same guy who created CS, it could be a smash hit for a game made by ONE GUY lol, he could become insanely rich off the sales of that game because he has no team to split it with, no company he works for, sure publisher, but not much.

I just find it funny to see how the game is growing, while others are shrinking, and yet if I ask almost anyone, they tell me "CS sucks", lol.

Here is his new game, may it find insane popularity like his first:

Counter-Strike is the one game I keep going back to since about 10ish years ago (holy fock!). It never gets old for me and there's so many different ways to play it. It's probably in my top 3 favorite games ever. I've spent time in clans before, but I usually just play casually for fun and conversation while drinking a bunch of booze.

what makes it so good is that you have to wait if you die, which makes "life" more valuable, also dead-times are kinda socialising more than in other FPS games so you dont feel like playing vs bots.

Also money management and tension bcs of round-ends where only a few players are left.

It's been continually developed and that's been most notable with the source version. I remember when CS:S only had 1 model per side. Now we get more spectacular explosions from a successful bomb plant.

I wonder how much influence he had on it being popular though... Sure it was fun early on, but Valve took over in like 2000 or so (1 year ish after the mod came out?). The early versions of the game really weren't that great, but with the refinements was made amazing.

One thing I really like about it is downloading replacement skins for everything (guns, characters, etc.)

    Plus, endless amounts of maps.

I think the reason it's so good is because it's so simple.

Oh man, now I want to stay up all night playing it...

    What are you talking about?

It never had one model per side...

There's been no new official maps for years, and the update to the Orange Box was the most the game has ever got content wise. there really isn't alot they could add, besides maps, and the community does a fine job of that already, so there's no real reason to.

I've had CS:S since release...and it never had only one model for Team, unless you're talking about the beta or some sort, but that doesn't really count.

Just goes to show you, even a game that gets basically no support can still dominate the gaming world ~ :p

They've been constantly updating/tweaking game mechanics over the years, the CS:Source BETA from a few months back changed quite a few things for example, it isn't content but it is a big deal still.

Well the game mechanics in CS are top notch and aside from the AWP/auto it's pretty balanced.

Although there are games today that are overall better presentations than CS, CS is the hands down best fps multiplayer game that will run on 5+ year old computers. In terms of old games nothing compares and since it's so good it's still able to come close to the fun level of current games even with dated graphics.

    Still I think I last played CS:S in 2008.

Let's go back in time and see the reviews...

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_cssource_pc

"Why is there only one character model per team, compared to the four options in the original?"

That's from a review I found confirming my memory of the game. So, what are you talking about? Obviously you weren't there from the start :)

    ^

You can see my purchase date on Steam I believe, and you'll see I was indeed there from the start. I just do not recall 1 character model per Team.

Yea originally CSS had no choice for character skins or anything and only half of the maps were converted.

Are You talking about the original?, I started from one of the first beta's in the 1998 range where there was a desert map with a bonfire and all the guns used to litter the ground with bodies..there def. wasn't Steam around then, way before 1.6. Game gave me a solid 6-7 years, haven't played it in quite some time.

I bought CSS due to a large number of players claiming it was the greatest FPS ever made. Played a few rounds only to realise it's next to impossible to get a hit or even know where your bullets are ending up.

Yet, I see in the kill cams players aiming below the target's feet and getting a headshot. Nothing makes sense in that game.

I've played Counter-Strike: Source for a total of around 7 hours ever since I bought the Silver Pack on Steam many years ago (before which I had heard of but never played any of the versions of Counter-Strike). I never touched it again ever since, not for me.

I don't understand why people like it outside the fact that they like it... but I guess that's enough reason for them to play it isn't it. I respect their choice, I mean I know how it feels to play a game for years because you like it... I've played Diablo II for eight years, Oblivion for three years... I still play 8-Bit, 16-Bit, 32-Bit and 64-Bit era games to this day so yeah. A couple of years ago I might have raged about people liking and playing C-S, but I'm above that, to each their own and let them enjoy it if they want.

I play CS Source every few days, just the mods basicly. the zombie mod the most.

normal CS: source is just too boring for me.

CS is a game that requires skill compared to most.
