Considering that this cards have the same GPU as HD 6800 series (barts LE) but only have disabled some shader clusters. It would be the best deal ever to turn this cards with 960 shaders.
Never heard of them being unlocked yet davetheshrew might be your best bet to ask about that sort of thing, he's the brave / crazy one who took a chance on his 6950 to unlock it to the 6970
According to AMD it's not unlockable. http://translate.google.com/transla...tung-der-Stream-Prozessoren/Grafikkarte/News/
Apparently AMD fused those off at the hardware level (Laser cut I think), but they're great overclockers, some people were able to overclock it up to 1GHz+
Found this article "Initial production runs of AMD's Radeon HD 6790 graphics cards appear to be hiding a pleasant surprise: a boost in ROPs from the original specifications." http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/4/8/amd-glitch-sees-radeon-hd-6790-get-boost/
Shader unlock seems to be left alone on purpose to boost initial sales of a particular card, until a "revision" without unlocking start to appear. Here, i dont see AMD winning in any way morphing that card into a HD6870 or similar. So id say no. Flash that card with a HD6850 or HD6870 bios and it will give you an usless chunk of circuitry... Until you flash it again with its original bios haha.
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=342341 <--frontpage news as of friday, says HD6790 can't be unlocked. I'm still considering a pair of these for crossfire....just have concern of x4 Crossfire and the performance loss as a result.
