I'm going to be in a rush to put my gaming rig together here within the next few weeks ( my builder dude is leaving town ) and was wondering if one single 580 can run just about every game out there right now?

I could always SLI the cards later , but I didn't know if the 580 is the card I should be looking at?

Been off the boards for a while now , and don;'t know if there is something new coming out I don't know about with either Nvidia or ATI.

BTW....everything will be air cooled , probably running a I7-960.....I think?

    With my GTX580 I can play any game in 1920x1080 maxed settings , like Crysis in Very High AAx16Q , Vysnc On , with 30+FPS , and Metro 2033 DX11 , Very High , Advanced PhysX , AAA , AFX16 30+FPS , Mafia II maxed , 60FPS.

I think a single GTX580 is enough for 1920x1080 and under resolutions , but with multi monitors or 2560x1600 , you need more power maybe.

Thanks Ash! I don't get much time in my life to play any more , but when I do , I usually play at 1920 X 1080 res.

I have to figure out what MB , ram , CPU and so forth as well.

I don't build a new rig but every 3-4 years.....so I want to make this one last a while. Besides , my old office rig has had it's time , and I'm moving this one into the office.....and I need to replace my "Fun" computer. hehe.

Yes a 580 will max everything and prolly all the way up to 2560x1600. or you could listen to the guys who think if you don't have quad sli you're not cool and go out and waste money.

Really great card, the only game I have seen frame rate drops is Assassin's Creed 2, but that only because of low gpu usage.
Edit...and Starcraft 2 when things get very hectic.

Agreed. Any game where the devs obviously focused solely on consoles suffer on any system, but you'll be able to run 90% of games maxed at a steady 60 fps. The exceptions being the usual suspects: Crysis, JC2, Metro etc. These titles still run very, very well, mind you.

This card constantly amazes me.

I've been told if you are going to game with multiple monitors or a 30" Dell, you will need 2 GTX 570's so I would guess it would be about the same for the 580...?

Considering its only the best card available right now I think it will suffice.

The 580 will be able to play anything as it's the fastest single GPU for now, but for the CPU, a sandy bridge i7 (2500K or 2600K) would be a better choice than i7 960 considering you will keep it for years. I don't know the prices in your area but here a 2600K is cheaper than the 960 by ~15 USD.

Oh yeah....I did some more reading tonight......and it amazes me how much things have changed in just a matter of months. This is >>> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 The CPU I was looking at. I guess it'll be a few weeks before some good P67 boards come out.

I think I'll be going with a single 580 for now , and then maybe in a year or so get a 2nd one and do a sli ( maybe sooner if needed ).

Thanks for all your help guys! Seems you guys always steer me in the right direction.

Yep , MSAA 4X is VERY heavy , AAA its fine :D

I dont have concret numbers because I dont like use berchmark tools , I only play the games with AB on , ok sometimes Metro 2033 FPS go down when have smoke and others things , but in normal gameplay its 30FPS most of time.

But FPS can change in differents systems , you guys know :p

The memory usage cited , yes , some games use like 1.3GB o.o , I dont remember what game , Crysis 2 or Crysis I think..
