How the hell can they just assume it was 250 million dollars?

These leaks actually create tons of PR..

Interesting article. No doubt he deserved to be punished but being truthful and cooperative was the right thing to do.

Quite a good read. I couldn't care less that he did it, I hate Valve, the HL series is over rated and they take the piss, oh yeah episodic gaming means short waits, like 9 months, well guess what, **** you valve it's been over 3 years now.

Also he's a moron for handing himself over.

My guess is that they called EA for the estimate.

    Good read.

I'm disappointed in the comments that support the guy for what he did, and say Valve shouldn't have tricked him. I really don't understand them. Leaking a game a year from release is alot different than pirating a game, imo. It is indeed the wrong one to do and can cause financial harm.

Still, HL2 turned out great, sold great, and is reviewed great.

Glad he turned his life around, but disappointed in the comments saying Gabe is "evil" for tricking a "little kid"(With master-class hacking skills).

He was only a young kid in his late teens though, so tricking him under the pretence of a job interview is underhand, and a little too sneaky for my liking, just arrest him, don't go through all that nonsense.

Not that he is a reformed character though, by the looks of it, he has been in an out of trouble since then, so Valve should definetly not give him a job.

Uh, if they didn't use that "underhanded scheme", they most likely never would have caught him so easily. Things went alot smoother because of this.

If he had been made aware, an emotionally disturbed German pro hacker teenager? Alot of **** could have gone VERY WRONG.

    Wait, you read it?

He didn't leak the code. An ******* that he trusted leaked the code, and got him in some serious ****. Gembe never did anything malicious. He had no intention to screw up anyone's day. He was looking for info on HL2, since no one knew anything, which is a feeling I sympathise with waiting for HL3/Episode 3. Half Life 2 was meant to be coming out on my birthday, before it was found out it was going to be at least a year late anyway. Thanks for telling us Valve.

The guy co-operated from the start, and basically handed himself in. I hope the friend got some decent punishment though.

He leaked it to his friend. That is indeed leaking it, regardless of what you say.

Then his friend leaked it, just to alot more people that time.

I'm also quite disappointed that some people were mad at Valve for not having HL2 ready when they saw the leak.

I swear, some people are down-right rotten and selfish.
