So i got this HDD from maff-08 its a 500gb Western Digital Green Anyway he said it works fine but some times dont get detected. Not had that issue my self. When i got it i formated it run chkdsk and all was good. I then backed up all my data to it and its now gone tits up. The MFT is corrupt and windows has been unable to fix it. I NEEEEED to get the data back off this thing! Data lifegaurd is running a scan of its own atm but if anyone knows of any other program that can help then please let me know Cheers
thanks, Im using a prog called Aactive@ File Recovery.. its been scaning for a while now and has been finding bad sectors left right and center UPDATE: So far this program has been able to recover my files.. a few have been corrupted but so far 99% of the files are ok.. Still recovering files
Well.. it seems there are a butt load of bad sectors at the start of the drive. Ive set up a 400gb partition with a 60gb gap before the start of that 400gb partition to skip the fubard part of the drive
Western Digital drives will pass most "third party" SMART tests but they will "fail" the WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. Happened to me this past Dec. 26, 2010. One of my Caviar Blacks was starting to "fail" during the boot process. Turned out my drive 0 was "re-allocating" too many sectors and the SMART was hogging the system.
Can you post a screenshot? Btw, have you tried a low level format? If the drive isn't physically damaged this can fix bad sectors by allocating 0. This means Windows won't see the affected sector, so can't use it.
Try running a Linux LiveCD, mount the drive as NTFS and it tends to be able to read stuff Windows itself can't. deltatux
In the end I would do what Pill Monster said, low level format. 500gig low level format might take a while.
How would i do this? Windows cant even format it, it sees the bad sectors and just fails to do anything, even chkdsk goes extremely slow due to the bad sectors. Any good programs for trying low level formats?
