The GTX 460 should be quicker than the 6850. The GTX 460 is more inline with 5850 performance which in turn is quicker than the 6850.
It depends on the games you play really. I suggest checking out performance reviews for the cards, starting with the 6850/6870 review here at Guru 3D. Generally speaking the 6850 either outperforms, or ties with, the GTX 460 1GB for most titles while pulling less juice and bringing the advantage of EyeFinity and a good set of display connectors to the table. The GTX 460 on the other hand offers better overclockability, generally speaking, as well as enabling CUDA and PhysX. Personally, without knowing your preferences in games, I'd go with Sapphire's 6850, the non-Toxic version, as it has an improved cooling system that runs both cooler and quieter than the stock version.
I went with GTX460 and dint regret. Great overclocker and performer for decent price. You cant go wrong with eather of these two.
You can't go wrong with either, make sure you pic Sapphire for ATI and eVGA for Nvidia. However, if I had the chance to go back 2 weeks, I'd have gone for the eVGA GTX460 though.
Why do you guys with 6850 regret your choice over the 460 1gb GTX? The 6850 is actually slightly faster if not mostly tied in performance for some games. The 6850 OC's like a beast, 900mhz-1ghz on the core without breaking a sweat. I went with whatever was the best value for the price. I have no regrets and very satisfied with my XFX 6850.
Nvidia's driver support, Physx, CUDA, lower temps (for overclock)... Dont remember what else made me choose GTX460, but I dont regret it at all.
I got my HD6850 for $160 + tax CAD i read many reviews and it says this card is on par with GTX460 if not better, and it's about 20-30 bucks cheaper overall. I got mine a week ago and i'm happy. It overclocks like a beast and I'm using stock cooler. I could OC the stock 775/1000 to 935/1140 with minor voltage increases. Great performance even on my slow computer.
Agreed man. On paper 460GTX might seem to have a slight edge, but both cards are pretty identical with 6850 slightly cheaper in my local stores, around 20 bucks or so. Some of the game benchmark results shows the 6850 has slight edge in games, and overclocks better than GTX460.
Slow down there m8 6850 isnt better overclocker than GTX460! I can easy reach 850/1720/2100 reaching a GTX470 performance and still dont go over 67c full load.
I would have to agree with that, at stock the 6850 is faster, but most people can get near 850-900mhz on them at stock voltages, which is roughly a 30% overclock. Wouldn't agree about the drivers though, Nvidia ones are no better at the moment, i've had no issues, but they have been inconsistent recently.
hmm I am choosing as well. So far I am waiting for cyclone 6850. (still don't have money so no problem waiting for it to hit the market) so I read a lot and made several tables on performance Guru3D OverclockersClub more here and here Essentially they are as close to each other as gpu can be. I am taking 6850 because of power consumption and because I have amd mobo, so no need to close the door on crossfire Also what I read on other forums where I originaly posted these, is that gtx465 takes the prize when you unlock additional shaders and OC it. But I don't like the fact that I would have to OC it just to get it on pair with others. Then shaders make it the winner, but power consumption is now close to gtx470...
Nividia's driver support has been worse then AMD's lately. And truthfully neither company has bad support, the majority of users are largely happy. Odd things happen time to time which make either look slightly incompetent. Can you show me some proof of this better support? Physx has never really taken off and now with the implementation of independent physics engines (like in 3DM11) it will see less and less use. How many Physx games do you OWN? If your pirating the games don't include them in your count as your not supporting anyone that way. CUDA does have some nice apps, but again its a proprietary system and OpenCL is gaining here, slowly. How many CUDA apps do you run? As far as temperatures I always found it came down to airflow. The system I am using to type this on has an AMD 4890 overvolted, I can run MSI Kumbuster (Furmark) and the card does not break 70c (Just did a 5 min run 1920x1200 4xAA fullscreen peaked at 69c fan at 52%). What temperatures do you see on your Nvidia 460 running Kumbuster or Furmark?
