Hi, im a single dad and Im on a tight budget.

I was out browsing this morning and spotted a 2nd hand unboxed 768mb 8800gtx for £60. the shop said they would give me £25 part exchange for my 1gb gt220.

Do you think this sounds like a worthwhile upgrade? If so this upgrade will mean ill need a bigger psu. will 450w do? i can pick one up for £20.
Then ill need 2 molex to 6 pin power adapters...:bang:

I would go for a better PSU but yeah that should give you some hefty increase.
    A 600W would be a safer shout.

    Ive got windows 7 64bit. :)

Ok guys, how do you all feel about cheaper 600w power supplies? like the standard type i'd find at pc world? i know to avoid bestek and a few other companies... is there a budget psu maker you can trust? the most id want to pay would be £40, really... im not lookin' to crack any benchmarks yet lol

Wow... that's a heck of an upgrade if there ever was one. O_O

You need a much larger PSU for that thing though. Coolmax makes good budget PSUs. I remember getting an 850w for $60. And I'd get 4GB of ram too... you'll be limited by your 2GB.

    EDIT:

I just checked and got a rough estimation for how much power you'll need. You can easily get by with a decent quality 550w PSU with room to spare.

Also, what clock speed does it run at? That'll help me out for figuring the real power needs and possible save you a few bucks. :D

Hi I would think the upgrade will be fine just only run newer games at no higher than medium and you should be fine.

As for the Power supply, put the card in and see if it will handle it if not get a new one if so
    then Bob's your uncle. :)

Thats dangerous. 250w is nothing. Dont listen to this, get a decent 550w psu at least.

Yes you can. And its more brutal than a simple energy cut. And no UPS will save you.

thanks for your reply. ill have a look round for a coolmax psu.
ive got 4gb ram running @667 with a couple of spare sticks i had lying round. £40 for another 2 x 1gb ddr 800... im defo thinkin bout it, i may have this board a while yet, ive just found out it supports phenom x6

i have to say, my gt220 isnt as bad as you would think... i know the benchmarks say otherwise, but i bought it with no knowledge of it and its been pretty good... i can play pretty games!
