7900 GS to GTS 250: Lower 3D Mark Score??? UPDATE! 4000 points lower on 3D Mark 2001...I know it is an older benchmark tool but I like using it to compare results from previous years and equipment. Is the new card underclocking for this program, and if so, is there a way to force it to run at max when I want it too?
3DMark2001 is too old for current gen cards. Give up on it and move to 3DMark05 for XP or 3DMark Vantage for Vista/7.
You know 3Dmark 01 is a great benchmark but it is for DX 8.0 (8.1). GTS 250 is for DX 10.Try 3Dmark 2000 and you will get even lower score then 2001. In my system My 3dmark score is 47K and my 03 Score is like 60k in XP. Now I am in 7-64 so now Idea now. You have to at least stick with 3D mark 06. In my opinion Try more in game benchmark then 3D mark for better results. Dont mind my language, kinda drunk ....
try 3dmark 2003 and 2005. 2006 is a bit to much for your dual core, you wont get an accurate score as by 2003 or 2005 - but even here you might see it a little bottleneck.
If you run 3Dmark01 on XP you get a much higher score than Vista or Windows 7, this has been known for some time. There must be some extra CPU overhead when running DX8 code on Vista and Windows 7.
SORRY to all, but I was right! I used Riva Tuner to force GPU to always use max 3D clocks and re-ran 3D Mark 2001 and the score jumped by 11000 points. (over the 7900GS) As I said in first post, "I know it is an older benchmark tool but I like using it to compare results from previous years and equipment." And, to the posters who say stop "benchmarking and just play games"...to me benchmarking is "just a tool", I still enjoy playing games....
Never said you were wrong... Amazes me that turning off "down clocking" increased score by 15000 points!
Actually the 4870 is significantly faster than an 8800GTS. Except for a few rare cases, the 4870 always has a healthy lead over GTS 250.
