Hey guys, I figured you Nvidia Fans could give me some good pointers.
I am collecting parts for my new rig. I have a Gigabyte GTX 260 Core 216 that I am thinking of using in the new rig.
I can either go with another GTX 260 core 216 or go to another card such as a GTX 460..etc. Which would give the best performance compared to price?

    Any opinions or suggestions?

Depends what and how much games you play and what CPU you use, you sure want a good balanced system with no bottlenecks here and there. If you ask me get a nice 460 1GB and be happy for a while. What parts have you "collected" already?

I'd go with new DX11 cards. Maybe a GTX460 or something better.

Depand in the rest of the rig.

I'd go for GTX460, less power, less heat, DX11, great performance with only one card ... something the GTX 260 doesn't have and adding another will give you a bit better performance than the GTX460 but at a HIGH cost of power and heat!

So adding another GTX260 will be cheaper but only if you already have a high end PSU (>600W) ...

I am getting a nice PSU...around 850 or over. Heat and power is not so much of a concern. I usually build the systems with great airflow and cooling. DX11 would be nice for the future but still not as widely used as many would like.
I will have to look over some benchies and talk with a few more people...
    Thanks for the advice.

BTW, Just noticed out of the replys only one guy lists a gamer soundcard....What a shame!

I've been using an addon sound card in my PC configurations for more than 10 years ... and after experiencing the difference between 3D EAX/A3D and 2D sound in HalfLife I just couldn't go back to onboard sound anymore and it is a shame that motherboard makers do not care about sound quality or gaming features, for example it would be great to see the ASUS Xonar AVx00 chipset on a motherboard with the GX2.5 3D sound capabilities :) or perhaps integrate 3D sound capabilities into chipsets (like nVidia did with SoundStorm years back).

Currently I'm very happy with my Xtreme Gamer PCI, it's great for games and the sound quality is good enough for my speakers (Logitech X-530).

I just went from the same rig you have (e8400 and DS3L) to a 760 and a P55 USB3 mobo and am quite happy. Most stable, most overclockable rig I've ever owned. On the GPU side the 460 looks like the best bang for the buck.

Get an I5 760 with a decent mobo and Ram.

Buy a GTX460 and keep your GTX260 as PhysX card.

    WIN !

That might be a good option.

Yeah, a nice rig with poor sound is just a waste I think but to each their own.

I am considering 1 or 2 460's...SLI may be something cool to check out. Maybe 1 for GFX and my other card for Phyx as was mentioned.

If a GTX 260 C216 is enough for your current needs, then just use that. It's still holding up well on my system at 1440x900, and should be able to play mostly high settings on current games at 1920x1200. The GTX 460 is solid card and if you really need to upgrade now, it's a great choice. But I'd hold onto your current card until something better from the next generation of GPUs arrive.

As for performance vs. price between SLi'd GTX 260s and a GTX 460, the GTX 260s will offer more performance at a better price if you look towards the used market (which is pretty much the only place where you'll get a reasonable price for them now). But the GTX 460 will run much cooler and on significantly less power. And in SLi, the GTX 460s scale amazingly well, much better than previous multi-GPU solutions. Between the two choices, I'd get a GTX 460 now, and then, if possible, add another one a year down the line when the price drops a bit.

Well a 460 but you will only see much of a gain in FPS because of the bottle neck with the E8400.

I gained a good 20FPS in most games upgrading to a i7 running at stock over a Q9650 at 4.0-4.2GHz

    Proof or dint happen.

Check GTX400 on Q9x50 CPU's thread there is not that much of a difference...

Umm, It did happen my last CPU was a Q9650, LMAO

What kind of proof do you want, I benched the hell out of the Q9650/480SLI and kept records of before and after these are just a few ;)

Bad company 2 before and after Q9650 vs 980 using fraps bench, everything was the same even same scenario except I had the AA set to 32 using the 980 and only 8AA with the Q9650
    Average is what important,

You talk about i7 in general with your 20fps boost but then come around with a $1000 6-core i7 and completely skip the information that your MB and RAM changed also. Its a lame comparison imho.

lol it would be something terribly wrong if it didn't, on a single gpu i doubt you would see much of a diff, but on sli and such gpus plus the fact that x58 support better SLI/crossfire doesn't surprise me..

    ontopic:

yea go with 460gtx, but i would hold on just a bit to see whats going on with nv and how it fixes those pos latency spikes.. if its still a prob then a cheap 470gtx will do :nerd:, and yea go with a decent soundcard as you said it yourself onboard are pos :D,
lol i saw someone with 4x480gtx and onboard sound i lol'd when i saw that rig..

In the OP I metioned this is for my next rig.
Which will either be I5 or I7...

Yes, I think I will just go 260 for a bit and then possibly set-up an SLI with a newer card. The GTX is doing it's job right now... I am not a hard core gamer however, I like to play games when I want but I am more of an audio guy;)

    Thanks for the advice guys.

    You don't need the $1000 6-core i7 to get good results :)

Lame comparison, Lame would be buying a card that is held back by the CPU and wondering why your FPS don't increase like they should... Oh yeah almost forgot you need a new board and memory, What did I need to explain that a i7 won't fit in a 775 socket to you?
