time for a cheap 1920x1080 monitor! Which one?

  1. Alright so i've been thinking and I've decided I'd like to upgrade from my trustee old Samsung Syncmaster 226BW. Its been a great monitor and I really love it. Its 22" with 2ms response time and 1680x1050.

Given the hardware in my system I'd like to up the res to full hd 1080p to get the most out of these 5850's.

I've been looking at the likes of Viewsonic VA2223WM which is 5ms 22" and 1920x1080. Would this be a good choice? Is 5ms gonna be noticeable after using a 2ms monitor for so long?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

YES! You will notice immediately and wonder WTF is going on or think something is wrong when your FPS is 60 but doesnt "feel" like it. With your horsepower though, if you can play games at 100FPS no problem, then the WTF feeling goes away because there are more than enough frames to compensate. Thats just my theory...

For a cheap 1080P hmm...I would check out AOC monitors. So far, they all have had positive reviews from me.
**Just saw this on their site!! AOC's first 23" IPS panel montiorrrr http://www.aocmonitor-anz.com/lcd_monitor/if23.php

If you get a new monitor, you really want to get a bigger one because it wont feel right switching to a 22" 1920x1080 from a 22" 1680x1050. I recommend 24" and above.

Hmm, doesn't sound right. 100fps is faster than 60fps on a 60hz monitor? Or rather, noticeable? What you're saying is you can make up for a slower response time with vsync off and running higher FPS (genuine question)? And to OP, you will notice. Things will be slightly more "blurry" when moving fast i.e the mouse across the screen. At least it is for me from ~8ms to 5ms.

Don't go for ViewSonic - 5ms could be noticeable, depending what games are you playing. I can't find info anywhere if this 5ms is Grey-to-Grey or full cycle. If 5ms is GtG - another argument for not considering this ViewSonic.

For cheap monitors try AOC or Hanns.G. I've recently bought Hanns.G HZ281 monitor - its 1920x1200, 28". It cost me 355USD/276EURO at the time, and I couldn't be happier. And really - 28" is not too big, trust me. Previously I had 32" LCD-TV as a monitor, but its power consumption and heat generated were too much for me - 150-180W only for monitor for 8-10h a day (I'm using my PC for work) is too much. This monitor uses 45-50W at current settings and produces a lot less heat - my room got colder :p

Also check www.digitalversus.com for many monitor reviews and comparisons (product face-offs). Hanns.G got very nice scores on this site.

  6. yeah i've been having a look around at the 24" monitors. There is two i've found that are exactly what im looking for. 1920x1080 2ms and HDMI. The two models i've been able to source in New Zealand are these :

    Viewsonic VX2433wm -$299.00 NZ
    AOC 2434PW - $298.00 NZ

They both have pretty much identical specs. both are TN Panels too.

the website i use is www.pricespy.co.nz which lists the lowest prices for computer hardware in my country.

Aesthetically I like both of these monitors, I think i like the styling of the viewsonic a little more which would suit my HAF 932 case better than the glossy AOC.

    What would you choose?

Both of this monitors have glossy plastic used for the case - as I can see from the pictures. I like the AOC better - it has simple rectangular casing and a height-adjustable stand. Rest of the specs are almost the same.

  8. you're right, most of the specs are the same and the AOC does look nicer really and does have the height adjustable stand. However it operates at 60Hz whereas from what I've read the Viewsonic runs at 75Hz. wouldn't that mean smoother gameplay? I know your eyes can't see anything over 60FPS anyway but my way of thinking is if the refresh rate is capped at 75 rather than 60, you'd be above optimal fps rather than just on the limit if you play with vsync on like i do.

Most of the monitors really support only 60Hz, which is a industry standard for LCD screens. Now witch 3D monitors, refresh rate was set to 120Hz. But the fact is, that even if specs are saying that 75Hz is available, you may see worse picture than with 60Hz. Or even the manufacturer still recommends 60Hz even on 75Hz-capable monitor.

    Check this out:

Maybe some monitor Guru would step in and give better explanation in that matter.

True, but one slight advantage, it's 1920X1200 insteade of 1920X1080, but yeah, it's quite a bit over his budget!

This is a end-of-life product, with MVA panel, 6ms GtG and 16ms on/off response time, 120W power consumption and was introduced in 2006 :/

Not so good choice for games :)

Cheap and good 1920x1200 TN monitor with all of the needed inputs (VGA, DVI, HDMI) - Hanns.G HZ281 :) Of course it has 28", but it cost me 355USD/276EURO. I'm really positively surprised by this monitor. I had 17" and 19" LG (TN), 22" HP LCD (TN), 32" Samsung LCD-TV (IPS) and now I have this Hanns.G - probably the cheapest 28" and it's great.

But if OP wants to choose from those 24" ones, I still would want AOC over ViewSonic one. 75Hz (ViewSonic) is practically not supported and can give you more tearing and skipped frames in games. Just read the article. 60Hz is the industry standard for normal monitors and that is it :)
