Hey all...haven't been here in some time. Haven't been keeping up with all the hardware.

Is there a new super budget card out there, like the 9600GT was, except newer and faster?

    Thanks!

I ended up with a 5850 for performance-on-a-budget, but will be adding a 5970 plus new power soon. I think the 5850 is currently in the best-bang-for-buck leadership.

    Thanks, but I'm talking "budget"...$100-$150 range. :)

ATI HD 5770 can be had for $150-160, HD 5750 and Nvidia GTS 250 are a little lower.

Thanks! But I assume a 9800GT would probably be just as fast, or faster than a 128bit 5770 card?

Possibly all irrelevant benhmarks to you if you don't play those games or run 3DMark Vantage.. however a similar trend can be seen with the 5770's performance ranging between around Nvidia 250 GTS/ATI 4850 performance up to near Nvidia 275, 285GTX and ATI 4890 performance..

Hehe yeh that used to be the mantra but that's now subsided quite well by the GDDR5 vram they use, kind of like having 256bit GDDR3 in my eyes really which isn't so bad at all - May be a crude comaprison but it works for me lol

How bout 512 bit GDDR3? ;) Just make sure if you get the 5770 that you get the GDDR5, some have been fooled by GDDR3 counterparts.

If you can wait then there's also the possibility of this if it ships out of China - http://www.guru3d.com/news/ati-preps-faster-radeon-hd-5670/

well not according to friend with same rig, well he had q9550 and at high clock 3.7ghz, he got the same fps in fear and lower score in 3dmark06, and even specs are much the same pixel fillrate ~12-13gtexls mem bandwidth ~76gb/s..

There are no 57xx or even 56xx cards with GDDR3. Only 55xx and 54xx cards use DDR3.

So are Hilbert's results wrong? The 5770 is overall faster according to those charts. Sometimes the difference is zero though.

It depends on the brand of the card.

Now that I think of it many GTS 250s are actually going to be more noticeably outperformed due to lower clocks and less memory. A large part of the GTS 250s on Newegg are slower than the ones used in reviews.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...048 106793024&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20

As you can see, many of them downclock to 675 MHz when the default clock is actually 738. They also reduce memory speed to 2000 MHz, dropping performance even further.

Nvidia does the same thing with the 9800 GT and 9600 GT, but sometimes much worse. Be careful to pick the right card if you're going with Nvidia's low-end.

    Default specs

    9800 GTX+/GTS 250 - 256-bit, 512 or 1024 MB DDR3 at 2200 MHz, 738 MHz GPU clock
    9800 GT - 256-bit, 512 MB DDR3 at 1800 MHz, 600 MHz GPU clock
    9600 GT - 256-bit, 512 MB DDR3 at 1800 MHz, 625 MHz GPU clock
