the substitution of FP16 render targets in alot of games in 10.3
which basicly is loss of IQ to get more performance in the simplest terms.

thats sorta cheating oldschool style like the old times.
not that i blame them they had nothing else they could do,they maxed the 5870 drivers for awhile unless they really have less quaility.

my tinfiol hat is on here...
i wonder if ati told reviewers to use these drivers or die? nah...

This was obvious, that's why I never bothered upgrading to the newer drivers. It was common sense that you can't just pull extra performance out of nowhere, you have to degrade quality.

I'm not surprised but based on Hilbert's review it seems that ATI's IQ is still noticeably higher than nVidia's.

i noticed zero image quality loss from going from the first drivers when 5870 was launch to the new open cl 4.0 10.3 drivers. also i didn't think ati told anyone to use the 10.3 drivers for fermi review cause some reviewers didn't use 10.3 and was using older drivers like 10.2 and so forth.guru3d is the only one i know of that used the latest drivers for both fermi and 5000 series.

Wouldn't believe everything you read, but im sure if it was Nvidia reported as doing this, most ATI guys would have no doubt it was true.

I wouldn't be suprised if it is true, the 10.3 drivers always concerned me, and i had suspicions that image quality had been lowered even if it was a level alot didn't notice,(most wouldn't at 1680x1050 using small 22inch monitors.
Either that ATI had been crippling their cards up until Nvidia relesed the GTX400 cards.

i doubt it. i use a 21'' crt 2048x1536 and noticed zero difference in image quality. also 22'' 1680x1050 is still good resolution to spot difference out. if you were talking about a monitor or tv at 1366x768 then yea i can see what your saying.

Wait, where does it say anything about FP16 in the article you linked?

    Everyone does it honestly.

If you optimize it to improve performance, with no NOTICEABLE loss, then go for it.

If you notice it though, and they're doing it to bump numbers, then there's an issue.

The tweak is only applied when using Catalyst AI at Advanced. I doubt any review was using advanced over normal. And if they did, then well they should not as that is enabling a tweak.

Everyone who is familiar with ATI cards knows "Advanced" Catalyst AI setting includes optimizations that may or may not slightly degrade IQ. This is why the recommended setting is standard.

This is old news. Hell, to call it news is too much, this is old general knowledge.

You know, whenever the fanboyisms start, it's always awesome to see it originate from a person with an ati/nvidia logo for an avatar.

Truth be told, who would notice while you're in the middle of a game?
