hmm not sure bout bein worth the price over a 5870, but is it just me that thinks the 5870 gets pwned in a few games

EDIT: hmm TPUs review suggests the 480 is less powerful than on the Guru one

Gino , they are telling me it has low cold bug on the memory and its very memory limited in the benchies , it will not knock out current WRs on single card bro , they have been trying for days and days , but its a no go , max clocks have been 1100/2200 on Shaminos cherry picked GTX480 , heavily volt moded and on a kingpin Tek 9 LN2 GPU Pot , 5870 will keep the top benchmarks WRs for single gpu as per the top clockers findings during all the testing trying hard for WRs its not performing well.

    Thanks for the info.

I guess 4-way SLI GTX480 have a chance at the WR maybe.

Those MSI 5870 Lighting are quite hard to beat, since it has a

custom design while GTX480 is reference.

Are you talking about the 587O? Its even slower than the 480 vs the 285. So in your terms, the 5870 would be a 'bigger fail'.

How is it a fail, from the many reviews i've seen it is at LEAST 50% faster in average frame rates across the board. and the minimum frame rates are 60-100% higher than that of the gtx285, the anandtech review showed that the 480 had higher minimum frame than sli gtx285's....which themselves were higher than the 5870 min frames...

In the dragon age benchmark on hardware canucks the min frames for a gtx285 at 1920x1200 with 4aa is 35 frames.....with the 480 it is 69 frames, that is a 100% increase in minimum frames, the same is true for many benchmarks.

While that isn't that much of an increase over the 5870 in that bench it is still a major improvement over a gtx285.

The GTX285 is nowhere near the GTX480 in any of the benchmarks i've saw, and certainly has a bigger gap compared to the 4890-5870.

It's pretty obvious its a card built for DX11 and PhysX, it doesn't need to beat older cards by huge margins, as long as it does beat them, the real gap is with newer DX11 games, and the gap will continue to grow.

i have the nvidia 3d vision kit so ati cards are not an option however good they are otherwise i would have purchased an 5970 soon after release
looks like i will have to make do with my gtx 295 till the refresh cards from nvida are launched (playing games in dx 11 will have to wait for some more months:thumbdown)

I don't really think any of the DX11 cards have longevity, these cards for me are justified in their performance of current games, and I know that is backwards thinking when talking about "future proof" hardware, but DX11 is absolutely brutal, and in metro going from Dx10 mode ( which gets about 70 frame average with max settings and no AA or physx ) to Dx11 mode....literally halves the frame rates, and that's with physx off...

I think by the time the next gen console's come out these cards will be absolutely pathetic, the same goes for Dx11 games in a years time. But judging from the performance drops now, it still won't be much better.

It's really getting a bit silly when you can say 1 card gets 30 frames in DX11 to another cards 19 frames.....because they are both unplayable....

They will be great cards for now, but only the 6000 and 500 series will have any balls in DX11

Meh. That's all I have to say right now. Still waiting.

    * The heat from these cards gives me the willies.

Sigh, maybe I was expecting too much. When the GTX 480 pulls far ahead of the 5870, both are already doing good framerates (like hawx where both are at 90 and above, or even farcry 2), but when performance between the 2 gets close to each other, their both doing low framerates (Metro is the best example here). Also, why does Hilbert say that their using the very best settings for Metro, then mention that they only use Analytical AA and not 4xMSAA?

I also find it odd that he never tests Crysis in enthusiast settings. Wonder when the time will come for that lol

I was disappointed with 5870 when it was released because I felt that its punch wasn't not strong enough thinking that Nvidia would come with something stronger very quickly. Anyway, that didn't happen, and Nvidia comes now with this monster that is 6 months late. Sure, the extra performance is good, but the problem is that to get that the card is too power hungry, too hot and too loud... and SLI is only for rich people.

While the above-mentioned is not an issue for people changing the card every six months or so, it is a real problem for the rest of us. Those temps will limit the life of the card. The heat being emitted is too much, and the fan is too loud to keep all that under control. Nonsensical seeing the performance gains. Besides, the 480 is too expensive as well.

There is something else that one should consider before ordering this puppy: there is a two weeks gap till they will be released to the masses. In this period, ATI could strike back with something better regarding the balance performance/heat/power/noise/price. I'd wait two more weeks before ordering this card, just in case.

Anyway, in my own case, I'll wait for the 6800 series or Fermi 2. To upgrade now is just stupid because the vast majority of games are still direct 9.

It'll be 6870 against the GTX 680's, Nvidia decided to count by two's to catch up :p

AMD said they won't drop the prices. Expect a faster 5800 card then with more memory, I suppose. Even if this future ATI card doesn't beat GeForce480 GTX in terms of raw performance, a better price and less power comsumption will do the trick quickly as regards beating the first Fermi release.

Clearly the noise and heat B.S is exaggerated, it's practically the same as the 5870

    That's from 'Hardware Heaven'

    @Dustpuppy

    haha that sounds like Nvidia

And it was a very good review despite that final Top Pick seal. Sorry, because I don't understand the meaning of the seals here, but I thought that Top Pick would be something pretty damn good in all respects. OK, maybe I'm wrong.

I'm talking about the 470 here, not the 480. It is only marginally faster than the 285 at best. It's disappointing considering the huge jump G80 gave us. And you're reading too far into the word "fail" I mean that it didn't meet my expectations. I had high expectations for Fermi, I wanted to upgrade to it. As it stands, that's not going to happen. Don't think that just because I have an ATI card that I must be a fanboy. I hate ATi's drivers.

If you mean the 470 then yeah I agree, the 5850 stomped ati's previous best (4890) but by comparison the 470 doesn't always beat the gtx285.

But I think the same was true of the 5850 at launch, the launch drivers actually put the 5850 about 5% slower than the gtx285 at launch, now it is 10% faster.

So the same could be true of the 470...but even then it is disappointing.
